Default Questions on my new 07 Honda TRX450ER

So i just got into quad riding and i was wondering how often i need to change my oil. I've only got 10 hours on my 2007 Honda TRX450ER and i know that after the first 20 hours of riding i need to change the oil, but i was wondering how often after that i need to change the oil, the oil filter, the transmission fluid, etc.. i just ride casually on the trails with friends (i don't race).

thanks,

- Tyler

10 hours? Yikes, change it before you ride again!!! The high strung 450s really need frequent changes to avoid damage. I usually go no more than 5 hours per for the oil, and change the filter every other time I do the oil.

Would be best if you had posted this in the Honda forum!

Your 450R is unique among all the quads on the planet, because it seperates the engine and transmission oils (God bless Honda!)! This engine incorporates formula 1 technology and your oil gets diluted out by fuel that blows by your piston, so it NEEDS FREQUENT OIL CHANGES!

Some essential reading on oil:

Change your oil/filter before your next ride!!! On a new quad, I change my oil/filter at 1 hour, to get any metal shavings out of the engine early on, then every 5 hours or so after that. During the first 20 hours I run a petroleum oil, then after that I switch to an ester synthetic oil and also do an all important valve adjustment. On the R, I change the transmission oil at every other engine oil change. You can change the filter every other change as well, if you wish.

During break-in, I like to run Maxima Premium, a high quality petroleum oil. After that I highly recommend spending the money for an ultra high quality ester synthetic!!!

I run Redline Motorcycle Oil on the engine side, and 80W Motorcycle Gear Oil with Shock Proof in the trans. The engine oil is very very slick (and happily rated JASO MB!), so you will see an increase in torqe and horsepower! ShockProof is bizarre stuff! The microscopic particles give lubrication like a grease on the surface of the gears, yet it has low paracitic drag. I highly recommend these oils over all others!!!

I also like Maxima's oils! If I ran Maxima in the R, I would run Ultra in the engine side (or 530MX in very cold weather), and Extra in the transmission side. You can also run one of the transmission specific lubes on the trans side. Here, I like Motul Expert 10W40.
