Hi! I'm Andy, I live in the desert about 120 miles from Reno, NV. I rode my first quad about a month ago and thought I would have no problem just writing it off as an "OK" thing..."Fun, but not something I want to get into"
Well...that wasn't exactly how it went!!! I had a blast! I saw tons of wildlife, old gold mines, beautiful wilderness...I was hooked! My buddy and his wife were in their Rhino and I was riding his Honda Foreman. We saw deer, eagles, a badger, wild horses and just like on the TV shows like Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom...I saw HERDS of Pronghorn Antelope!!! They stared at us while we stared at them...then we decided to move on and so did they...they were galloping across a hillside that was covered with rocks, walking would be beyond difficult. Several times the leader of the pack would change course and the whole herd seemed to be in radio contact! It was really a sight to see.
OK...I will stop rambling and share with you what I now OWN (thanks to my buddy)
I have a 2002 700 twin Sportsman...I just bought it and sent my wife into town today to get some parts. I won't be able to ride it til I get 2 new rear axles but I am doing some other fixer upper stuff while I wait for Momma to cut loose with the $$$$$$$$$ for the axles.
We live 120 miles from town and I need to get an answer BEFORE she drives home.
The Polaris dealer had the drive belt & oil filter for my machine...but did NOT have the oil. I didn't get an owners manual so I can't tell my wife what type of oil to buy at a Wal-Mart. Can you help me out???
Also if anyone knows, does my bike have separate transmission oil??? If so what type should I use?
Is there an online owners manual on someones website somewhere???
Thanks!!!

hey andy. i have a o5 predator 500. not sure if same motor at all but is thier anyway to find out what the last guy used. i always like to keep my oil the same. im still spending a fortune on ps4 synthetic oil cuz thats what polaris ran in it fro the get go. if it was sunthetic i heard u dont want to go back. not sure why. amsoil rocks. but never used it myself. i too run in the desert (AZ) so u want the best in oil, antifreeze and dust protection. my motor is suped up and has lasted 5 years in these conditions, which i am amazed. but i run synthetic ps4 polaris oil and ,cant remember name of the super antifreeze, radiator scoops and hose billit inline cooler thingamajig. all together it adds up. cool engine means happy engine. not a mechanic but i hope this helped. oh and my mechanic swears by amsoil. id change but im married to ps4.lol

oh 700 nice. thought it said 500. anyways walmart in phx carries nothing id personaly run in my bike. maybe yours is different being a smaller town but if ur waiting on axles id just order some thru dealer. good oil is best im sure for the hot conditions we run. i reccomend synthetic 4 stroke. it took me a while to believe it works being so thin but ive been happy.

I gave up waiting and just told her to get me Mobile1 synthetic. As far as asking the last owner...it belonged to my sons best friends step-dad. His mom got it in the divorce. It has been ridden by the boy ever since and I don't think any maintenance has been done. Me buying this is helping his mom to send him off to his first year in college. I knew it was going to be a project when I agreed to buy it!
The drive belt had about 4 inches of teeth missing, the boots on the CV joints were torn, the exhaust doughnut was missing...It was so loud that I really didn't hear the chunking of the bad drive belt OR the clicking of the CV joints. The first part I spent money on was the exhaust gasket. THEN I heard the rest of the works in action!!!
That's OK...I don't mind
! OK it sucks! I would rather be out riding but at least if I replace all the crap I am replacing...I won't get stranded out in the boonies! I HOPE!!!
