Talking New to quads... not forums

Just as the title implies.... Just got my first quad. 1989 Yamaha Moto 4 250 (or 225 - whichever it is) 2wd

My brother in law had it along with a Kawasaki Prairie 650 and a polaris trail blazer. I expressed interest in it because it seemed like no matter how much everyone abused it, it would still start up and run without any problem... I told him if he ever wanted to sell it, I wanted it. My boys love riding on it with me.

Well, he wound up moving to Ohio and only had room for 2 of the 3... so he left the Moto4 with me... for FREE!

That being said, I have a laundry list to take care of... priority one is brakes. Not a single one of them work.

But, like I said... it starts up and runs with no problem... can't believe it.
Carb needs adjusting or maybe a complete rebuild though... haven't investigated it much. Bogs out at WOT... almost like it's fuel starved. Also can't get it to go in reverse either. Other than that, there's really nothing wrong with it. I'm so stoked to have this thing!

Thanks guys...

UPDATE - got a chance to fool around with it yesterday. It's a 250cc and the reverse works just fine. Didn't know you had to have it in gear to put it in reverse (D'oh!)

Still having the problem with it bogging out at WOT, but I'll figure that out later... oh yeah - no brakes either.

Good to know. Hopefully they're cheaper than the sites I've seen so far... 150 bucks for an atv brake caliper is pretty steep.

One thing to keep in mind is that mechanical parts for Yamaha where used on different years and models. Example. My front brake cable (one of them) was not a Terrapro and won it on ebay really cheap.

Your WOT issue is probably a dirty jet or needs tuned. Service manual should be number one on your list. I just rebuilt a Makuni carb (special) for my TP which attaches to a governor and the manual gives full details on tuning and installation.
