polaris sportsman oil smell
I recently acquired this atv Polaris sportsman 400 and it was in a poor state of repair after replacing bearings in front right wheel hub, replacing starter, replacing bendix and battery repairing pull rope and cv boots. I was able to ride it then I noticed a oil smell when running as if it was burning when it ran. I don't see any smoke. I saw in the internet that you need to let these run and warm up a bit before under a load. so am assume the atv was probably abused to the max before I got it. I know this is a loaded question but how long can I expect to be able to use this before I HAVE to rebuild or is it better to go ahead and do it. also it it better to just hone the cylinder and replace rings or bore it and replace piston.

That is a loaded question.. Only time will tell, but you can tell by engine sounds by piston slap noise or if it sounds like marbles in a tin can. Then time to freshen up the engine.Never just hone a cylinder and place stock rings in a two stroke. Always have it bored to the next over size. Beware though the 400 is a tricky engine and has may other parts that may need to be looked at. Get a manual from the site for 10 bucks and at least you can tell what you may be up against some day.DOWNLOAD Polaris ATV Service Manuals By Model & Year
