question about bad cv joints
#1
my friend has a 4x4 quad with a bad outer cv joint (makes a clicking noise) but he keeps riding it. what kinda damage can he cause if he continues to ride the quad? he said that he already knows that the cv joint is bad but it will not ruin anything else if he keeps riding it.

I had the same problem last sunday, my outer left CV joint broke. Its didn't break all the way but enough to screw up my stearing. I could of removed the broken metal inside it and kept riding but I didn't. What if more metal breaks? What if that metal breaks so much that it jams and locks that tire up? What if it damaged your front diff because it locked up? Why take that chance? I got my whole left axle shaft replaced under warranty. If he has warranty get it replaced ASAP!! If he has no warranty then I guess its up to him. He will need a new axle shaft as the outside CV is not rebuildable. So its not going to be cheap, that is why he is waiting.

It could be safety issue at higher speeds. If the ***** fall out, it could cause inadvertent steering and make you drive off the trial and into a pond, stream, river, or off a cliff. If the outer housing of the CV gives up, the shaft could get out of the outer cv housing and also cause an accident. Very unwise.
I realize that is a lot of IFs, but the consequences are bad enough for that to be just plain stupid.
