Default tightend belt- now lost 13 mph WTF

I spent like 6 hours on this thing today tighting the belt just to get a tighter belt, and nothing else . if i would have lost like two mph i wouldnt complane but i whent from 67 to 54 mph and i hit the invisible wall at like 45 mph thats bu11$hit. Im going to sand mountain next weekend and i have a reputation to hold of being a 400ex killer and i wont be killing anything but my fuel milage the way its running. All i had was one shim so i took it out . the only person that was happy with my loss of speed was my dad he had the biggest smill when i told him i could only go 55mph now. Im going to tak it apart to morrow to see if i messed up any thing it looked like after i put in the c-clip that the black spring was compressed to much . i dont know but maybe one of you know i need help.

Tightening the belt has no effect on top speed. You have another problem that is affecting you. Maybe you did not assemble the clutch right.

JUST FYI, the shims control how far the driven sheaves close at idle, and very slow speeds. If you are going faster than that, the shims just sit there loose, not controlling anything.

A new belt will affect top speed.

Try taking a real close look at the repair manual, or maybe that "Belt shim procedure" that DJnemisis wrote up in the tech tips area of my website to see if you have any parts out of place or upsidedown.

My guess is you have a button laying on its side restricting how far the sheaves will open up.

I also suspect something is messed up in the clutch system. Take it apart and follow the service manual instructions step by step.

You can use the service manual for jetting. Use the instructions for carb disassemble and assembly. Skip all the steps except the ones that deal with the jets and needles. The reason they do not have a topic on jetting alone, is because all the info if already there in other topics.

Know how you feel. Put in new belt and black spring and lost 9 mph. Put the stock spring back in and loosened up the belt and got back my speed of 72mph on the speedo and 67 on GPS.
* note: with tight belt and black spring speedo was 64 and GPS was 56.8mph
