Wierd problem with Bayou 300, help!
#1
Hey guys, my freind has a 1990 Bayou 300 and it is in decent shape but is a bit rough. The problem is at night. When you turn on the lights it will loose power, back fire and cut out and eventually stall. Shut the lights off and boom, lots of power. Last night we had to drive home on my lights, he was following me. Anyway, I would say there is a short in the lights and the kill switch as they are so close together. The bike also has a history of getting wet and loosing power?? Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions let me know and I will pass the information on. Thanks.

I would check the battery really good. I had a problem with the charging circuit on my prarie, when the battery was low it would start fine, but run like crap at high RPM's. It would also die with headlights on or if it was wet. Sounds like a weak battery or charging circuit to me. Could be something else, but thats a start. Kill switch shorted would cut it dead really quick I would think.

the 300 bayous had a problem with the voltage reg going bad and it would over charge the batt and boil the batt over. check the charging voltage at the batt with a volt meter while running and see if the voltage goes over 14.5dc if so then reg is bad.
