Default a question for nyroc

nyroc, thanks so much for all the info on your site. My 650 wore the original belt to almost less than spec in under 300 km. Dealer said thats weird, but no warranty on belts. I put on a new belt($145Cdn) as well as the black spring. Deflection was @ max w. new belt. After putting on a few km, I checked deflection again(about 30mm). I removed the one shim that was there and tried the new belt, about 18mm. Put the old belt on and got a perfect 22mm. My question is, on your site when you say with no shims that a new belt is tight, do you mean just @ min. deflection, or is it tighter than that(eg. 18mm). Thanks for your time and all the great info on your site.

just at minimum deflection. Mine squealed at idle at minimum.

hey nyroc, thanks for clearing that up. my belt seems to doing just fine now, have'nt had any problems since tightening. once again, thanks much.
p.s. do you think it might cause any damage if the belt was slightly under minimum deflection? as I understand it, it should wear in after the first good ride or two.

It will squeal at idle. Only drawback is embarassment, and a greater need to shift to neutral when idling.

Mine has been squealing at idle for 800 miles. Even with the idle turned down. That belt lasts a LONG time tight. Shifting is easier too.

You may have seen my original post on belt squeal. Thanks for the great info. Based on your info I will let my belt continue to squeal. The squeal is a minor thing compared to improved performance and increased belt life. I don't understand the CVT operation very well at all but why is it necessary to shift to neutral when you are idling rather than tolerate the squeal?

Thanks again for your numerous contributions to the site. It is very helpful and appreciated !

It will wear a glazed spot, or a low spot on the belt. You aren't supposed to idle a loose belt in gear anyway, it is bad for them too (just not as bad).
