How could I forget this other minor detail

While I was waiting for my bike to be serviced, this old man walked over to me and said, do you own a Prairie 650. I said yes. He said come and see this. So he brought me over to his 650 that was in the shop also, and they had the seat off and they also had the pull cord assembly off. Behind the pull cord cover, there was some sort of wheel with 3 notches in it I think. Anyway there was 3 black marks that someone had made with a black marker. So this man started explaining to me and my buddy Chris that that stock timming on a P650 is 14 degrees retarded. I guess that he had indicated the 14 degree with the black mark furthest to the left on top. I would say that this mark was almost top dead center. Then he proceeded to show us a little black box sitting on top of the gas tank near the fuel pump under the seat. There was one wire I think that went from this little black box to the CDI at the rear of the bike. He explained to us that this little black box advanced the timming of the machine and would unrestrict the bike. According to him Kawasaki has retarded the timming to slow down the bike. Because they did this, this would make the bike run hotter, and it would also make the bike harder on gas since it was restricted by the computer. So according to him, now that he had installed this little black box, he would get a minimum of 25% more power from his bike. I then asked him why he had 2 other marks beside the other one that was the stock timming. He said that this is how much degrees he had gained. This didn't really make sence to me. But this old man really seemed to be on top of things regarding CDI's. This might make sence to some people, but to me and my buddy, it didn't. So he finally got the black box installed, and he took the bike out for a spin. All I can say is OH MY GOD!!!!!. The motor reved up a lot quicker and once he gassed the throttle, you should of seen the bike spin and take off. We thought that our bikes had power, but we didn't have anything compared to his. I wish my bike wouldn't of had been on the hoist getting serviced cause I would of liked to compare the two. He also mentioned that the unit cost either $250 or $350 US dollars. I can't remember if it was 250 or 350. I then asked him how much he expected to gain on the top end, and he said that he didn't know cause he never opened her up. He only wanted it for bottom end power. So it was quite and interesting morning to say the least. I think I really seen the true performance of our bikes this morning.

I really couldn't tell you if this is a manufactured product or not. It looked professionally built. The box was probably 1 inch by 1 inch. I could hardly see it since it was in between the trop of the frame and the gas tank. He also mentioned something about connecting the wire from the black box to a pink wire on the CDI.

I only got the owners first name. I think it was Leron but I might be wrong. I could call the dealer and asked them for the name of the gentleman that was their at the same time as me this morning to get this black box installed. If I could get his first and last name, I could probably get his phone number that way.

That discription describes the DG unit & directions for hook up to a T( thats sitting on my desk ) ... but then any unit that does this function will probably be the same size & hook up similarly... WAM

Would a frequency modulator cost either $250 or $350 USD?

I still don't know why they would put the new timing marks on, if they were just insalling the module ??? WAM

I really couldn't tell you why. All I know is that timming was at leat an inch to right from the stock mark which was close to top dead center. When he came over to get me, they already had the box installed and they had the marks already made. They where just soddering all the wires and taping them up. He had a tape measure and he was measuring the difference in the stock mark and the furthest on the right.
