650 and water
#1
Hi guys,
Just wondering if anyone else has this same thing happening to them while making deep water crossings..has happened twice to me.
When making fairly deep water crossings, i've found that once i get to about the height of the seat (slightly lower than the seat actually), the 650 just shuts down, haul her out and with a slight choke, she'll fire right back up and work fine. Not that this is a bad thing..as it's much better than filling the cylinders full of water (which happened to a Honda 300 and Kawi 300 on the same brook this happened the first time to me) Anyways, there's no water in my airbox after this happens..so i'm wondering what's causing it....either she's getting a very slight amount of water in the carbs and shuts down (which i don't think is happened as there's no water in airbox, and she fires right back up afterwards) OR due to the water..i'm loosing fire somehow...possibly even plug wires shorting (I don't have any dielectric grease in the plug boots).
Any thoughts ???

The quad will not just quit. Unless you have a hole in your air intake somewhere. Its not a "how deep can I go before it quits" question you got, its a "Why is my P650 dieing in the water" question. I have gone in some pretty deep water with my Kawi, to the point where the belt would just barely slip from water spray. You should be able to go up to the air breather, that is just above the seat. Between the handlebars and the seat, is the air breather. The belt intake and exhaust is about the same level I believe.
Check to see if the spark plugs are firmly screwed in and the boots are not peeled back. Maybe add that spark plug water proof grease stuff you can buy at the base of the spark plug boot.

Hey piski
How you been? How many km's do you have on the beast now? Are you going on that big run on August 16th organized by the FROG comitee?
I've never experienced this problem with my bike and I've had her in some deep water holes. The bike shouldn't shut off like that. I'd get her checked out.

Hey Dan,
umm about 1100-1200 Km's now. I've been busy working on 3 different bikes, plus other "stuff" to the 650 this week to even look at this problem, but I will. I doubt it's nothing some dialectric grease won't fix.
I've finally got the power back I lost after putting the mudlites on, plus more !!!!!
so where's this run on the 16 th Dan ? and who's FROG ??

So you put the Mudlites on. What size did you get? What did you do to get the power back LOL!!!
FROG is a combination of all the Region 7 ATV clubs. F stands for Fredericton/Fredericton Junction, R stands for Rusagonis, O stands for Oromocto, and G stands for Geary. Well since this spring they have formed a comitee and are working real hard at creating some new trails to ride on. They are organizing a huge run on August 16th. They will be leaving from the Rusagonis Rec Center, we will head towards the Junction, then cross over to Geary, up to Oromocto, down to Lincoln, and back to Rusagonis. They are making a big loop. At the end, they are having a huge BBQ. Kind of a get together of all the clubs to get to know the other members.

dan,
I ended up getting 27's...as for the power.....nothing major..lol
I'll hafta see if i'm working then or not. Actually i'm not a member of the local club, as I was outta bikes and into Jeeps when it was established, but know most of the members though. I should join actually..is this a members only ride ?

How do you like the Mudlites? I bet the bike looks mean with those 27".
No this ride is for anyone. It's not even a poker run. It's organized by the clubs, but anyone can go. Also on September 6th, the Rusagonis is having it's poker run. Probably one of the best in the area. Good chance to test out those Mudlites LOL!!!

Actually Dan, i'm liking them more and more...at first I wasn't very impressed due to the loss of handling, and rougher ride. They actually ride alot nicer 2-up, with the 4# i'm running in them. They sure hook up though, especially when powering out of a hole..ya gotta watch them (as you know), or you'll be staring at blue sky !!!!
That run on the 16th could possibly be one we take in. I'm off that weekend, and the 'boss' of the house thought it would be fun....we'll see. I'll be talking to some of the local club members and see what's up.
