Lakota mods?
#1
My riding buddy has a 96' Lakota and he loves it. I think that it is a cool quad as well. I have a "00" 300EX and sometimes we switch rides out on the trail to mix things up. But the Lakota doesen't quite have the pep that the EX has. He is looking for a way to pep it up a bit to make it perform like my EX. But where to start?
Has anyone added a pipe, cam or other mods to a Lakota? Just courious to see what sort of gains that can be expected and what works well to give a Lakota that extra little kick.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks Chris "00" 300EX

I had 2 Lakotas, sold one and kept one. The only mod I've made is to fix it to start in gear.
I posted here about a year ago about my comparison between my 98 Lakota and 96 Warrior. I did a 1-mile run, both ways, and used a GPS to determine speed.
The Lakota was only about 3mph slower than the Warrior.
The most common mods are replacing the air filter and/or airbox, rejetting and putting on an aftermarket pipe.
The airbox is a problem because of the unique design Kawalski used on the Lakota. I rejetted mine for high-altitude. You can probably get a pipe for around $150.
I have a friend with a Lakota who put Holeshot XCTs on his Lakota and it certainly has good traction, but the heavy-ply tires really made it ride rough.
I think the Lakota is a pretty good ride the way it is, for moderate riding. If your friend really wants something to beef up and ride hard, I recommend selling the Lakota and getting a true sport quad. If he likes to do long rides and take along a cooler and toolbox, then the Lakota's the thing.
