I noticed today that my drive pulley opens up much wider that it needs to, so Newbeetle, you can get me a much wider belt and it can still be adjusted with the belt all the way down the primary. That is good, there is room to grow.

Hurry, newbeetle.

Newbeatle,
First off, I know very little about CVT belts...but it seems to me that whatever belt you install on the P650 must be shaped so that the sides of the belt have the same angle as the insides of the clutch pulleys or else the result will be that the belt and pulleys will wear out faster. Am I way off the beam on this one or is my concern true? If my concern is true, did you check to make certain the angle of the belts you found were the same as the angle on the pulleys?

That confirms what I thought about mine... we should be able to shim the rear to set the deflection... & a $45.00 dollar belt sounds sweet to me... WAM

MIKEYBOYESQ... I've already thought about that...typically variable speed belts are either 30 degrees or 40 degrees( or what ever SHOTGUN say's LOL ) ( I think, but these belts are available in these pitches )...we aren't totally out of the hole, but I'm optimistic that I can find one of the 3-4 close to what I think we want, that will work...

I'm still waiting for shotgun's belt to show up. My goal here was to find a Gates equivilant, and to get the belts at a low ball price for us through our supplier. It is pretty much confirmed they are made by GATES since the rep was told it was a Kawasaki belt when he shown them the numbers. Aparrently there were more questions from Gates and this is why the Rep wants a belt.
If we are in luck this type of belt will be in wide spread use throught industries and there will be many different widths and lengths to choose from.
For now I just hopeing for cost savings.

Clutching issues

Biggest problem with getting a harsher primary is the delay in takeoff. Usually counteracted with heavier weights in the rotating mass which equals less power.

A Correction could be to install a set of heelclicker style weights on the primary to give you added bite power without changing the primary and to shave off about 1 to 2 ounces of wieght from the rotating mass.

The Secondary would be a better setup if you could change the shift angle on the helix built into the center of the clutch. A heavier spring in the secondary is always a benefit as it forces the shift much faster. However without the benefit of custom angles on the helix and the way Kawasaki designed it it would be expensive to manufacture a variety to test. Also in the secondary try moving the spring around in the holes. I think there is two maybe three in there - I run polarises and this is a cheap hop on on them to change them from 1-3 to 2-2. I am at sea level and this does have an effect.

On the belt yes the 360 is wider but about 4mm longer. You get better bottom end but loose about 3 MPH on top. The 700 Prairie clutch and belt are the ticket. The clutch has minor refinements to the sheaves and also has a better shift ratio due to somewhat of a less rotating mass - Thanks VForce, not much but a little.

I hope this helps - best place to learn about clutching is on heel clickers web site they explain a lot on there..

A heavier spring in the secondary slows the upshift by offering more resistance to opening the sheaves.

The secondary spring does not use torsion holes,it is a compression spring.

PRAIRIEWRENCH... You've gotta know you're welcome around my place... Right now, DWB & I have ( tentitively open ), the weekend of the 13th & 14th of September... unfortuneatly this forum moves at light speed, but my life does not... possibly, I may be able to slip one of the new belts on, before hand, just to see if the theory will work, as I should have 3-4 of them here before then... I'll need to leave the cover off, pull the K-BEC fuse & inspect that the belt doesn't go over the top of the primary, & infact, I may, since several of the belts will be the same thickness, have the magic belt selected by running it in neutral, & observing the CVT function, prior to speed testing...

NYROC... if you could measure, what you would percieve as the widest belt we could run on our primary, that would be a big help... I'm expecting that 1 3/8" wide...1/4" wider than the stock belt, should be a good place to start... the tricky part will be we will have to match the width & length increases to properly fit the clutch...
