Transfer case problem KVF 650 ??
Did any one hear of a fork problem inside the transfer case on 02 praire only? is this common? my friend blew his and was told that it take 45 hours to replace (ouch!!!). Was that corrected for 03? please help! I need to know if I should get rid of my 02 and buy a newer one.

Transfer case problem KVF 650 ??
There is no transfer case. the front drive shaft always turns. Power transfer to front differential is accomplished via an actuator and a sliding gear.
Some people have broken the 4x4 sliding gear and the pinion gears inside the crankcase by jumping and holding the gas at full throttle (dumb), and trying to get the 4x4 to shift while stuck and giving it too much gas (also dumb). This doesn't seem to happen to the rest of us.
There are shift forks in the transmission, but so far I haven't heard of a single problem with them.
If a dealer told someone there was a fork broken in a transfer case on a 650, I would be suspicious that it was a rip off job. The shift linkage has needed adjusting on almost every 650. I guess cunning dealer could charge someone for 45 hours of work then just adjust that shift linkage and make a big profit.
Don't worry. Get an 02 or and 03, better yet get an 04. Just don't take it to your friend's dealer.

I've got an '02 that has been raced, jumped, & ridin very hard, with over 1,200 hard miles... no problems with anything of that nature... at the $65.00 my local dealer charges per hour, that comes up to $2,925.00...1/2 the cost of the quad in the 1st place...
As much as I love my Prairie, I would be driving something else if I was unable to find a good dealer, fairly close...
IMO, finding a good dealership, is more important than the brand you're riding... most brands make a quad that I could get used to, if I had to...WAM

He had to have said "4 to 5" and not 45.
I wouldn't get rid of your 02 just because your friend trashed something in his front diff.
My P700 seems a bit harder to get into 4x4 than my 02 P650. There were a few part number changes in the front diff. I don't know the significance of the changes. I suspect my P700 will shift into 4x4 easier as it breaks in more.
