Default Prarie 650 Belt Drive

Hey Riders,

I got the 2002 Prarie 650. i was wondering if the drive belt on that bike is an automatic tighten or if you have to, or can, tighten the belt yourself. when i hit the throttle 1/4 way and then stomp on it, the bike just revs up and doesn't really start to move unless i let off a little and then it'll start moveing. however, when i gradually give it gas it'll shift smoothly. so i took the cover off and saw that the belt was pretty loose. If any of you know of this will you please write back. Thank You

Sounds like you have a really loose belt. You have to manually tighten the belt yourself. I would recommend buying a shop manual so you will have the directions any time you need them and right there in front of you for adjusting the belt deflection. The manual will pay for itself the first time you use it. If you dont want to buy the shop manual then a guy called nyroc has scanned his shop manual for everyone to read. He has the directions, specs and tools listed to adjust the belt deflection yourself.

Good luck.

Maddog, that is worse than I have ever heard. Might be something more seriously wrong with it.

The driven pulley may need rebuilding, you can replace the half with a bushing or get a new bushing machined by a shop. The drive pulley may have some problems too. Might just need a lube. Don't turn the key on with the CVT cover removed unless you unplug the KEBC motor (electric motor on top of cvt cover).

Whatever you do, make sure you fix it. Because the pulleys wear out really fast when the belt is slipping. The belt should be the only item that people replace for many miles. But, if they leave it slipping too much, then the pulleys need replacing earlier than they should have. I checked and the online price for half of a pully is around $150 ($300 for the whole pulley). You wouldn't need to replace these if the belt is kept tight.

If your belt is glazed it should be replaced since it slips really easy.

The 650 belt drive really doesn't take that much work, not hardly any money at all. But it can bite you really bad if left unmaintained. You probably didn't want a lecture. I realize you just got it.
