You can prevent your PC from ever going to partsdirect.com again, no matter who is on it using the following tech tip from Nyroc:

If you are using microshaft windows, using notepad you can edit the hosts file found in

"c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc" for win2k
or "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc" for winxp
or "c:\windows\system\drivers\etc" for win9x

add the following entries under localhost

127.0.0.1 partsdirect.com
127.0.0.1 www.partsdirect.com

You can also do this if you are using linux under /etc/hosts
If you are using a mac, place a sticky note on the monitor.

Note: be careful not to save the hosts file with an estenstion (like .txt) or it won't work.
Note: if you have already been to partsdirecect since you last rebooted, you may need to reboot again for this to work.
Note: if you use your own DNS server, create a shadow zone for partsdirect.com and none of your PC's will ever go there.

When some website makes me mad, I am afraid I will forget about it. This fixes that.

Plus, they can give you any ads on other people's websites. In fact, some of the ads that atvconnection posts do not show up on my web browser because my PC can't retrieve anything from that url.

Friesen: you're right, there really isn't a 127.0.0.1 address. The hosts file can be used to map a url, ie: "www.sitename.com" to an IP address. So if in the hosts file you associated address "www.sitename.com" to address 127.0.0.1 when you key that URL it maps to 127.0.0.1 which is in effect nowhere at all. Voila! You don't get to that site.

I've got my hosts file loaded up with a whole bunch of ad server URL's all mapped to the 127... address. The end result: no annoying ads!

Computers always refer to themselves with the address 127.0.0.1, so 127.0.0.1 is essentially like "I" or "myself". If your PC has a website, this technique might take you to your own website.

the reason 127.0.0.1 is the best thing to put there, is the computer doesn't waste any time to find a webpage on itself, and it realizes that the web page does not exist faster.

You can also do stuff like put the ip address for your school in for gamehome.com or aol.com to keep the kids from playing games and chatting on AIM (it will keep you off AIM too). That way if you type www.gamhome.com, you will be sent to your school's website. This does not work on webservers that use host headers, but you guys get the idea on what you can do with it.
