Default Am I stupid or something? Sprocket help please!

Allright, why the $$#@%$# can't I get the nut off that holds the front sprocket on. I've tried for a couple of hours the last 2 days and have had no,luck. I bent the lock washer down around the nut. I went all the way arounfd the washer and bent it completely flat against the sprocket. I soaked the nut with wd40. I've used a 3 foot breaker bar and can't get it off. I think my problem is that the sprocket is turning enough while I am trying to loosen the nut that I am not getting effective torque application to break the nut loose. I am trying to loosen the nut with the chain still in place and trying to use the rear brake to keep the sprocket from turning while I try to break it loose. Is there a more effective method for holding the sprocket in place while I try to loosen the nut?

Any help would be appreciated. I could take it to the local shop but they said they would have to keep it 3 days to do the swap for me because they are backed up. I don't want to do that if I don't have to.

The problem you are having is with your chain. You can't get enough torque on the nut because your chain is stretching and the fact that you need a quick, hard blow on stuck nuts, to break them loose. My suggestion is to remove the chain, and secure the sprocket against the frame, with a homemade device. Make sure whatever you make grabs both sides of the sprocket, 180 degrees apart. If you try to wedge something against the sprocket, on one side only, you could cause the case to crack. Finally don't push soft on the breaker bar, give it a good hard shove, or use an impact, if you have one available. I hate to ask, but you inspected the thread to make sure you are turning it the right way? Good luck, let us know how you do!

Just be careful you don't fry your oil seal, though.

I don't know what kind of bike you have, but is it possible that it is a reverse thread nut?

Just a thought.

Ride On.

It is a Lakota. I can't actually see the threads but I am almost positive it has standard direction threads (not reversed).
