You burnt it in one spot. It has a low spot, where the belt did not move and the pulley spun, heating up the belt in one spot. Now the clutch rattles when the low spot comes around. Time to buy a new belt. Sorry, it must have been on the loose side from the factory. Nothing new......
Maybe it isn't as bad as mine, when I smoked it, doing the same. I got the dealer to warranty it. Try to make them. Tell them it was loose. How many miles/hours on it?

In case the dealer won't cover this under your warranty, you might be interested to know that a new P700 belt is about $64 from Tracy's World of Cycles (1-800-860-0686). I haven't actually called them for their price, but that's the price I've seen posted on this forum recently.

Good luck!

How did you finally end up getting your friend out?

I don't know if this is your first belt driven bike you've had , but it takes some
getting used to. A belt drive bike ,when you press the gas , the wheels
must turn. You can't just ease in the gas slowly while pulling a stuck bike
like you would a semi-automatic like a Honda. When you press the gas ,
the tires must spin. You don't have to slam the throtle but still give
enough so the tires move. A belt drive is not like a clutch; it's not
designed to slip. it does'nt take much slipage to smoke it and then
the damage is permanent on the belt.I pulled out a polaris Rancher
out of a bog with my P650 once without smokin the belt. I spun the wheels
a lot but still got the job done.

Good Luck.
