Default A question for KevinM...

Hello Kevin. As a member of this forum, I've come to respect and appreciate all of the advise you have given. I was blown away when I first saw your pitures of you beating a banshee and a raptor on your V in that drag race several months ago. I went out and bought a HPD plain thinking that it might help me in my races. Well, now it turns out that it only hurt my performance by overreving my engine as my cousin on his Pred laughs when he passes me going even faster than before Well, I've never heard it asked of you, but what have you done to your engine to get the performance you have? I know you have the spring changes, dual intake and DMC's, but do you have any head work done? I don't think I can get my V to go faster than a modded banshee, but oh how I would love to leave my cousins pred in the dust! I'm tired of him calling my V a utility!

Thanks Dynoray..
I was not able to download your video as my computer kept losing the connection but i'm sure as the owner of Fundy powersports, you've discovered how to make the V a monster. Are you going to divulge any secrets? My V has plenty of bottom end but no top. I've read where people have bought the Dalton and EPI clutch kits and still get passed by Raptors once they hit 4th gear! I'm almost certain that the engine has to be ported to make them more competitive but any info would be appreciated.

I think the biggest trouble with the V is you run out of gear ratio. (stk you run out of power at the same time) Dalton have an overdrive cover, (3-4mph) but you need a little more power to use it. A set of duals, and lots of air in the airbox is a must, porting helps too.

Here's a step-by-step timeline of what I did:

Bone stock: losing by 6-7 quadlengths to the Banshee. When he hit sixth, it was all over.
Polaris white spring: losing by 2-3 quadlengths, but he couldn't pull me any more than that.
DMC pipes, Hotseat purple spring, removed the coolant lines from the carbs: Much easier to keep the front end down. Started pulling him by 1-2 quadlengths and was easily taking the piped Raptor.
Changed to the AAEN green spring just for testing: Dead even to 1/2 a quadlength for him, quickly switched back to the purple.

After that he added a Trinity 2 into 1 carb and after riding his I knew I was in trouble. It was pulling stronger in every gear and had a lot better throttle response.

So before we lined them up again I added a second snorkel, K&N, cut the hood vents out and had to jet up from 138/142 to 152/155. I also put the HPD plain in, but it doesn't feel quite as strong as it did with the purple spring. I also lightened the clutch per Shotgun's pictures and put in NGK Iridium plugs. Still able to pull him by a couple of quadlengths. I picked up a nice power increase from the airbox mods, filter, etc.

I can launch mine at full throttle and keep the front end down, THAT'S where I'm putting the hurting on everyone I race. I'm 2-3 quadlenghts on them in no time, that's the advantage of the auto, and I've yet to be passed even in long races.

I can't say that I could get the same results racing in sand because I've never done it. I would think the weight of the V would be a bigger disadvantage in the sand than in dirt. I also never race on pavement. There's no way to pull a good holeshot on pavement with the torque the V has. The front end will come up no matter what.

Thanks for the help Kevin. Knowing that I don't have to break into my engine to be competitive with the big boys gives me hope for my "big ol' utility"
