I noticed on my 2002 P650 where the rear axle goes into the rear end on the left side the collar around the seal is not flush with the rear end housing and on the right side the collar around the seal is flush. Or what I am trying to say is that they are not the same on both sides. I was wondering if this is the start of a problem? Please help?

 

I'm not clear on what you are stating... but it's not a problem unles it's leaking or your rear diff fluid turn white. Some 02 have a black rubber boot and others don't that's why this doesn't make sense to me. Do you have these boots? I don't.

 

I replaced both rear seals a couple of week ago because both were leaking. The seal on the right was flush with the housing and the left one was not. When I replaced the seals I tapped them until they were flush. I'm not sure if this is why the left seals failed but both were full of crap. I also put the black rubber seal covers on both sides.

Like Kawi650 said, if its not leaking then I wouldn't worry about it. Definitly check your rear fluid on a regular basis. If you're still concerned you can easily take the housing off and tap the seal until its flush. I would install the black rubber seal covers that are shown on the 700 diagram. They were only $5 each so it made sense to put them on. I figured they added them to the 700 for a reason. It helps keeps the seal from being directly exposed to the sticks and crap in the hell holes I put the Kawi in [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

If anyone is looking at doing the right side on a 650, you don't need to buy the whole housing as shown in the Kawi diagram ($215). Both the left seals and right seals are the same. The part numbers from the 700 are the new seal part numbers.

Are you sure... this is a weak spot and all I can say when I replaced mine I'm glad warrenty covered because it an expensive "pop"

 

Thanks for your replies! BogHog, You said when you replaced your seals that one was flush and the other was not. That is how mine is. You said when you replaced them you put them both back in flush. I just wonder if the factory has a spec on this, or will this cause any problems? I looked at my local dealer at a 2003/2004 some had the boots over them and some did not. The ones that did not have the seals covered were not flush on both sides. They were out past the groove.

 

Streetrod, looks like we both had our seals seated the same (right flush, left out). At the dealer, what sides were flush and which were not? Im not sure what the factory spec is on this.

The seats in boths housings looked identical and the seals on both sides have the same part numbers on them (NOK AC2342F-outer and NOK AE2369K-inner). There are two seals in each housing, the smaller outer one (the one you can see) and the larger inner one. The bearing is not pressed into the right housing and should come out easily. The seats are wide enough to hold the seals. If the smaller outer seal is not flush with the end of the housing, then part of it will stick out into where the inner seals sits. The full width of the seal will not be seated against the housing. The same will happen to the inner seal. I'm not an expert but it made sense when I seated the seals that they should be flush to get the best possible seal against the housing.

When I looked up the 650 part numbers on RonAyers it says the old part numbers were replaced with new part number:
92049-1571 is now 92049-0012
92049-1592 is now 92049-0013

These are the same numbers as the left and right seals on the 700 so I order these instead. Comparing the new seals to the old ones, the new inner seal appears to have a bigger "spring" and lips looked like they may give a better seal.

Kawi650, this is a weak spot on the 650. There seems to be a few 650s with rear seals leaking. Thats one of the reasons I put the the boots on.

My 650 is way out of warranty. I wasn't willing to shell out $215 Cdn because Kawi didn't/wouldn't/couldn't add part numbers for the right side seals. Again, I'm not an expert but replacing the rear seals was not rocket science. Faced with $15 for the right seals or $215 for the whole housing, I was willing to try the seals.

 

Both seals on the 2003 Prairies were seated the same, about 1/4" out, Not flush. Thats why I was wondering why mine were not seated the same way. I don't have any leaks.

 

My one seal on the left is leaking so I did a search and found this old thread. Thanks for the info on the seals Boghog. We have a place here that I am gonna try to cross reference those seal numbers to see what I can come up with. My Kawie dealer is an hours drive away, so if I can get those seals local, it saves me some jack (gas money that I can use for the 650!!)

 

Do you just have to pull off the axle hubs in order to slide on the rubber seal protectors found on the newer machines? I just replaced the seals on both sides and would like to protect them.

 

Novakaw, you only have to remove the axle hubs to put on the rubber boots.
