my grandpa's p400 has a primer on it by the carbs (i think its a red button about the size of a quarter) when ever it didnt start we just push the primer a couple of times and it worked fine

Wow... you learn something every day.I thought the 400 never had a primer. I don't recall one on my 98 400 never had a problem with it starting in -40 so I really didn't need to look for one. Hint for people that don't use there ATV too much: when you try to start it and it will not start (sitting from the fall until now) take it to a garage and put it inside for couple hours and take the battery out the night before and it'll start easy. If you have a hard time starting it and you constantly are using it through the winter then you probably should replace the spark plugs and becareful of not killing the battery when it is flooded.

I've owned many Kawasakis, bikes and atv's and they are all cold natured. Only thing I hate about them. I have to coax my P650 along on very cold days with a little shot of starting fluid in the air filter, especially if hasn't been rode in several days. Try that and you should get it going pretty quick but don't overkill with it. You don't want to burn a valve. Another trick is to turn your fuel petcock off if it is not going to be rode anymore that day.

super lean mixtures will do it everytime. Find out what pilot jet it has and go up one in size.
However if it has a primer you shouldn't need a new jet. Both Kawi quads I have owned have had one.

I wouldn't use starting fluid, it can do damage in a hurry. I was just up in northern Wisconsin over the holidays and it was zero degrees. I just had to choke the P650 and it started and idled. I had a blast riding on the lakes, icy roads and snowmoble trails. Like a snowmobile without a windshield. I used to live there and it seemed that when you used starting fluid, it became addicted to it. Just my observation. I moved south because of the LONG COLD winter. I don't mind visiting.
