I don`t think anyone from southern wva. ever thought the trail system would be doing as well as it is.
It really has helped pump a lot of money back into the economy. I know living around it everyday we did`nt realize what we had until you see all the people from different states coming in to ride and enjoy the southern hospitality.

I'd like to find a camp where we can drink a few beers at the end of the day (maybe 1 or 2 at lunch), and dont have to fire up the truck until we want to leave. Showers would be great but other than that we dont have many needs. I've slept under the truck a time or 2. It would be a long drive so we would stay a few days.
Are the weekends crazy or is the place so big that it doesn't matter?
Can you ride out on the trails and set up a camp out in the woods?
500 miles of trail?? How many acres?

Each trail subsystem has about 100 miles of trails in it. They are “loop” oriented so you can plan a route that brings you right back where you started from (i.e. the trailhead). Two of the four subsystems (Rockhouse and Buffalo Mtn.) have town access (ride your ATV into town) at the opposite end from where the trail head is so you can get lunch, gas, etc. A 5th subsystem is scheduled to open in March which expands the system to over 500 miles. However (currently) the individual subsystems are not inter-connected but are within 45 minutes or less hauling distance from each other. You can easily spend a full day on each trail subsystem though.
There are places to stay (motels, lodging, campgrounds, etc.) nearby all trail heads and you can ride your quad from where you stay to / from that nearby trailhead. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on the trails, but may be where you are camping, staying, etc. (however I’d advise checking with where you plan to stay 1st ).
You can find trail maps on the Hatfield McCoy website here along with a list of rules / regulations.
The weekends aren't really crowded (with all those trail miles people end up being pretty spread out) unless you pick a time when a special event is happening (see their website for a special event calendar and even then it tends to only get crowded if you are at the trail subsystem that is hosting the event). However be aware that all trails are two-way so you could meet someone coming the other way at any time. In spite of that the trails are so awesome you can have a blast...

There is no camping in the woods.
We've ridden just about the whole day and never had a problem seeing alot of people. Maybe only 20 or so once we got out there.
There are plenty of campgrounds you can find, I think the one is devil anse.
As for the acreage, lots and lots and lots. I honestly dont know a number though.

The place is so big, the weekends don't matter, UNLESS there is an event that draws more of a crowd than usual.
The places to stay are really cheap, if you are in a group. There are not a lot of campgrounds in the area. Last time a group of us went (14), it cost $21/ea/night! Less than a cheap motel! There is a nice campground over near Gilbert(south end of the Rockhouse Trails system). I can't remember it's name, but I can get it, if you P.M. me.
Yes, there ARE at least 500 mi. of trails. Don't know acreage. It would be better expressed in square miles!

Want a real rush? try Tellico, NC.
HM is nice, and big, but Tellico will raise the hairs on the back of your neck.

Top’s Bar and Grill has the best prime rib I have ever had. I have often thought of driving up just for the steak and taking 4-wheeler for something to do while recovering from the meal. 1-1\2 thick. Try it and you to will see. Oh the trails are out of this world too.

Tops does have a good steak, we make that one of our evening eatery stops on every H/M trip. If you are only going there to eat then you don’t have to pay the cover charge (the restaurant part is in a little room off to the left side as you walk in the door)…
