Default CDI FAQ up

I looked at some of those pics of the installed CDI. It looks like it stood up to the elements well. I like to submarine my Prairie on occasion so I sure hope those suckers are water tight!

I've abused it with no problems. It's sealed as well as or better than the stock unit.

Peace,

Default CDI FAQ up

Sgt Rock,
Thanx for posting the FAQ...it is very helpful. I am very anxious to see your Tazzo testing results once you get them done.

BTW, your FAQ states that the Prairie owner's manual indicates that 91 octane is required for the fuel. Actually, I'm not sure if that is always correct. According to page 49 of my 2003 P650 owner's manual, my quad requires fuel with a minimum rating of 91 using the Research Octane No. method or a minimum rating of 87 using the anti-knock index method. I'm not 100% sure, but I seem to recall that most gasoline sold near my home is rated at the pump using the anti-knock index...in that case, 87 is the minimum required. But I'm not sure if the other method (RON) is used at other gas stations or not. Does anyone know which octane method is most often used at gasoline stations in the US? Just a thought...

Happy trails...

I think that the antiknock index, (R+M)/2 is what every pump uses that I have seen. I have driven across the US 3 times (I80, I90) and Antiknock Index is what I saw on the pump, but that doesn't cover every state. I read around on the web and I think I saw a bunch of documents that state than the antiknock index is what is required to be advertised at the pump. I never bought gas in canada. I did buy some fast food at that chicken place, and I would go there again if I find myself in canada again.

RON is not a desireable rating for common use on automobiles IMO, since it only accounts for use in an engine under light loads. I am surprised Kawasaki mentioned it in the manual. Maybe other countries just use RON, that would account for the listing.

MON testing simulates severe operation or high load at high RPM. Different gasolines will have varying RONs and MONs, so the general practice in the US is to use the average of the two (R+M)/2.

Thanks for the clarification guys. I'll get that squared away this evening.
