Default Air mixture screw

On the airscrews people say 3-3 1/2 turns out with dmc duals. Ok my question is , is this 3 turns out from where the screw is set or should i run it all the way in then 3 turns out?

Righto. Turn it all the way clockwise (in) before backing it out. But once you meet resistance, don't force it any farther in. These are brass screws and seats and brass is a very soft metal. It could ruin the seat if you tighten it too tight before backing it out.

BTW, if the screw is on the intake maniforld side of the carb (closer to the motor), it's an idle mixture screw. It controls the gas flow at idle. If the screw is on the side of the carb closest to the airbox, it's an air screw and controls the amount of air mixed with gas at idle.

And to confuse things more, they work oppositely. Turning in (clockwise) an air screw, reduces air flow and richens the idle mixture. Turning in an idle mixture screw reduces the amount of gas mixed with air during idle and leans the mixture. Not all carbs have both idle mixture screws and air screws. Usually one or the other.

Not meaning to be a wise guy here; just thought you might want to know.

Hope this helps.

i'm 4 turns out from all the way in your fuel screw works just like a valve the more you open it the more fuel goes in as a rule of thumb with the motor warm and the machine idleing turn the mixture screw out until the motor is at its highest rpm to far and motor will start to dog down hope that helps

To take the guesswork out (I don't trust my ear) when I'm tuning my quads, I went to Sears and bought a decent multi-meter that had a tachometer function.

As you slowly turn the idle mixture screw out from all the way in, keep an eye on the tach. You'll be able to see exactly where the RPM peaks. That is the ideal setting.

Is the idle mixture screw and the pilot screw the same thing?
