Bayou mods?

WebCam grinds a superb drop-in cam (grind 40a) giving lots more top-end power without sacrificing too much low-end grunt. I'd recommend one, unless you're doing lots of heavy hauling at low speeds.
Grind 40b is more radical, for highly modified (e.g., bored, stroked, etc.) engines, requiring valve train upgrades.
A cam will move your power peak higher up the rpm scale, allow higher revving, and produce another pony or two up there (compared to a stocker). If that's where you want to operate, an aftermarket cam is your most cost-effective engine mod, in my opinion.

Here are three practical, comfort-oriented modifications you may want to consider:
1. Replace your handlebar bar-end ***** with the bar-end weights from the Bayou 400. They are a $30 bolt-on and do a fair job of quelling the vibration of the non-counterbalanced 300.
2. Put a speedometer on. The unit to use is the one from the 400. It has a resetable trip meter and mounts between the handlebars where it is less likely to be damaged. The 400 speedo costs about $200. This is only $50 more than the 300 speedo which has no trip meter and which mounts on the front cargo rack where it can easily be damaged. The 400 speedo does have a built-in coolant temperature light at the 6 o'clock position, but it can simply be ignored. Finally, since the 300 and 400 use the same rear differential and speedometer drive gear, the 400 speedo will read accurately on the 300 with absolutely no changes, just bolt it on.
3. If your Bayou is a pre-99 model, add the retrofit fender extensions. They are the same as the ones used on the 400. They cost about $125 and they do a much better job of keeping you clean and dry than the stock fenders alone.
