Default IMS fuel tank ?

I've been reading on here for awhile that the V-force doesn't have fantastic mileage, and that some people have put on a bigger tank, but when its full it makes the quad hiny-heavy. Is that really a noticable problem? And also, how bad is the mileage, exactly? Could anyone compare it to the riding times of a Raptor or Sportsman? And would the IMS add a lot more range to the 700? Thanks..........

Default IMS fuel tank ?

My first ride out on the V with my buddies I ran out of fuel on the ride ! One rides a raptor with a pipe/k&n and hotcam. the other a bone stock DS 650. Both went for fuel while I waited stranded. They rode three miles to get fuel and back to me. Then we all went back to the truck and they still never went to reserve.

The next week I purchased a IMS 4.6 gal tank. I have ridden probably 40 hours with the new tank in and can tell no difference in handling. Then again, I weigh 260 so its not like 15 pounds of extra fuel is gonna make a big difference with my clydesdale body on the bike!

Hope this helps.

I checked the milage on my v force on what I considered a fairly fast pace and came up with 15 miles per galllon. So depends on how many miles you want to go out before you turn around. We go riding in Colorado several times a year and I am planning on staying with stock.

If the IMS is 4.6 then you guys must have a pretty small tank. Gas weighs 6 pounds a gallon. I'm guessing it adds about a gallon or 6 lbs but it is past the axle so there is a multiplier of something. Personnally I wouldn't worry about 6 to 10 lbs, the pluses out weigh the minuses.

I'm pretty sure that water weighs 8lbs/gallon, and I'd guess that gas is a little heavier than water. The stock tank is 3.2 gallons, IMS is 4.6 so you get an extra 1.4 gallons or around 12-15 lbs extra weight.

Re: mileage: on a 26 mi. desert hare scrambles I raced last year, I got 13.4 mpg. While riding at about 1/2 to 3/4 race speed, I got 17 mpg. Someone already said they get 15 mpg, I'd think that's a good number to use.

Hope this helps.

water is more dense than gasoline. Try it in a glass (I don't mean drinking either) and you will see that the gas will rise to the top (much like an oil spill). Water is 8 lbs/gallon, gas is either 6 or 7, can't remember. Been 20 years since science class.

At 72 degrees F. Water weighs 8.4 # and gas weighs 6.25 # Gas becomes more dense at higher temperatures and weighs more. At 90 degrees gas will weigh 6.68 #. Hopes this helps to answer your question. I just got the info off the net.

Thats very weird how my 700cc V twin gets worse gas mileage than my 1500cc V twin Vulcan. Weird how things work. I am gonna be getting that IMS tank soon. Cause I don't like having to run back to the truck for gas when it's like 10 or miles away. I guess I could strategically place gas cans around the areas I ride. Hah
