Just got my 91 recently and it is very tough to start. Even warm its 5-6 kicks and I have to blurp the throttle. Is this normal?
I am going to take the carb a part and clean it, anything else I can check?
Runs awesome once it starts.
What is compression on the quads when they are new?
What is the volume and type of oil you use in the crankcase?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. I can't believe how quick these little quads are for a 250 4 stroke.

mine is brand new and i have to give a little throttle to start it, but it is a one or two kick deal. i would clean your carb like you said, and adjust your valves.

Is adjusting valves tough to do? I am quite mechanically inclined just never owned something like this. To I have to remove the motor to get to the valves? Thanks again.
Can valves being out of adjustment really effect starting? As I said, once running it seems to really move.

Buy a shop manual or a Clymer manual and follow the steps. It isn't hard at all. Motor stays in frame. Just getting the plastic and tank off is the time consuming pain.

I think yer starting problem is a old spark plug
Try a new one
Also I would check the clearance on the valves....for sure...buying a used unit, you dont know when that was done last.
Setting the valves is a piece of cake.......getting the valve cover off took me the longest time...

Sounds like I'll be teaching myself how to set valves. I do have a factory manual. I'll take a look.

How does the valves being out of spec effect starting? Took carb a part. Strange carb. Not like the Mikuni's I'm use to. Looked good inside. Float was off a bit but not enough in my opinion to cause tough starting.

Spark plug is new by the way. I'm not that much of a rookie.

All the plastic carb and air box is off already.

Carbs done, valves are set. One set were too tight. Waiting for a new choke cable as I found mine to be broken. Cleaned out all the air tubing and filter. Hopefully does the trick. Choke cable won't be here until late this week.

For some unknown reason it's always the intakes.

Weird.

Well I learned about setting valves the hard way. I guess the cam was in the wrong spot when we set them and the de-compression valve wasn't working. I could dam near stand on the kick start and it would hold me up.

Machine is still kind of tough to start.
Do you guys full choke a cold machine?
How about timing, is that worth checking? Seems to me that might effect starting too.
Any inherent electrical issues I should be checking with an OHM meter or something.
