been having problems with the belt drive. Mine has only 380 miles on it and the belt drive is slipping for the second time and the darn dealer wants to charge me $100.00 again to tighten the belt. I love everything else about this qaud but if I keep having problems im going back to a Honda.

I had the same problem with my dealer. You buy a brand new toy from them and they seem to enjoy turning your fun experience into misery. The quad is you will find out is terrific, but the belt (and some of the dealers) are a little touchy.
My experience is as follows.
When I purchased the P650 I scheduled an initial recommended break-in service at 10 hours, to be performed two weeks after picking up the quad.
The first time I rode the p650 I noticed the belt squealed upon takeoff. When I dropped it off two weeks after I purchased it at the dealership for the break-in service I told the dealer that the belt slips. They did the ten hour service and told me the belt did not slip or squeal. Like an idiot I took the quad home only to find that it squeaked just as much as before.
I called them a week later to bring it in (to shim the belt) and they couldn't fit me into there repair schedule for one month. When they finally shimmed the belt a month later they told me I had too many hours on it to do it for free. And since this was a "wear" item it wasn't a warranty issue.
I refused to pay, and they relented after much arguing. If I hadn't written down my requests I would have been screwed.
In your case find a competant mechanic to work on your belt for you. I don't think their is anything magical about a kawi dealer doing the work. Try a snowmobile shop if you have one nearby. They work on cvt clutches all the time.
By the way after my belt was shimmed it hasn't squealed since. I now have 1250 miles on the belt. I do follow NYROC's belt life Do's and Don'ts.
Hope this helps

Sorry I didn`t get anything written on last post. I have an 02 650 praire with about 2200
miles. I am on my 4th belt, replaced secondary clutch bushings at 750 miles (200.00)
(past warranty).
Just replaced total secondary clutch (480.00), total costs with 4 belts about 1100.00.
Everyone keeps telling me that mine is a rare problem. I also ride in low when trail riding
in tight woods and hill climbing. High range when fast trail riding. Don`t use it for any pulling.
I have a 2000 Rancher 4x4 that has 3400 miles and has been ridden
harder than the praire, and it runs like new. The belt deflection was checked and corrected
as needed on the praire. Usualy no shims needed. I suppose it`s possible I had a bad secondary
clutch to begin with. I have read a lot of these forums and I don`t recall many riders complaing
that there manul shift does`nt work. Unless there toe or thumb is broke!
I`ll admit the praire rides great and if the (auto) is working, it`s great. My next wheeler will
not be belt drive. Even if it means a rougher ride, and I have a lot of back pain now.
I simply have lost confidence in this machine. Not trying to bash it or Kawi. Just want more
reliability. Also had Honda 300 4x4 for 9 years (over 5,000 hard miles) change oil and adjusted
brakes. Sold it to a good friend and he is still a good friend (4-years later).

i have had the factory belt now for 2 years. in the first year i put on a total 1200 miles in 4 months. i now have a tad over 1650, with the factory belt. i just started to shim it last month. i ride almost allways in high range, even up and down hills and when i plow my driveway. the only time i put it in low is when i forget how much torque it has. to me low range is useless.
