I only have 50 miles on my Prairie and already don't like the whine, it sounds like a gear box that's low on oil. Does the fan on anyone else's come on all the time? I had it re-jetted for high altitude so it should be running right.

The whine is the straight cut gears.Everyone I have been around do this.I still am not used to it but have learned to live with it.The magazines even comment on it when testing.I think I saw on here somewhere they did not use helical gears because of the strength of the straight cut gears. It's like a manual shift car........ever notice in reverse the tranny whines???...well the reverse gears are straight.
The radiator fan does run alot. You HAVE to keep the radiator clean on these bikes.Make sure before you ride it's not stopped up at all with mud.Just use the garden hose and clean the ENTIRE radiator.I use a light from the back side to see if I can see thru it.

Whining on mine too. Added to continuous ringing in right ear, and I'm hearing a regular symphony.

kodiac and skooter, thanks for the info. I'll check out the radiator and also check all fluids as I'm getting more than the sound a car in reverse makes. It's a metallic squeel type of noise.

Mine used to run hot until I got some miles on it. Let it break in a bit and you will find the fan doesn't run nearly as much. Make sure your carbs are jetted right. Don't leave it up to the dealer as a lot of those guys have no idea what the hell they are doing. If you have a squeeling sound at idle, your belt is too tight. If you have a belt squawk at takeoff, your belt is too loose. The whine you are hearing is not coming from your quad, it's coming from all your riding buddies!! "Slow down, I can't catch up"-----"Quit roostin me all the time"----"Can you pull me outta this mudhole?" Don't worry. You'll get used to it!!!

mastr, mine doesn't start whining until 10-11 mph and it seems to start dying down at around 20-21. It also doesn't whine in Lo range.

Wyo, the other guys here are bang on the money. The whine you are hearing is from the straight cut gears in the tranny. Way stronger than helical cut gears, but way noisier. Do the muffler mod and you will hardly be able to hear it!!
