The secondary black spring is to prolong belt life. The primary replacement spring from EPI or Dalton is for more power and acceleration in the low to mid range.
I put the EPI black spring on a few months back. Called EPI last week and talked to Krista about the primary spring. She asked what size tires, 25" mudrunners, and recommended the pink spring for my quad. It is very similar to the stock spring at idle, but engages better than stock at higher rpms. She did not suggest a clutch kit to me since I already had the black spring. Also, and I hadn't hear this before, she suggested replacing springs once a year since they fatigue a bit with the constant flexing while riding.
I recommend you call EPI at 218-829-6036. Call Dalton too if you want. I haven't put the pink spring on yet, will install it next week and post results.

I use a Dalton blue..very simlilar to stock stall....but a HUGE difference in acceleration...will get you to top speed alot quicker..
At least on my V it does....the stock acceleration used to peater out around 40mph and slowly go up from there...no more with the dalton blue...
Secondary spring basically effects how hard the clutch will grab the belt....in lay mans terms

Crawdaddy,
There's a forum member, KevinM, that keeps a primary spring table web page. The URL is http://www.700v.com/id33.htm.
He's tested a bunch of springs and provides footnotes about the benefits/drawbacks of most springs. I found it very useful.
Hope this helps.
