Tire Comparison
#1
I have a tire dilemma. I am considering two totally different tires to put on my 04 twin peaks. either 25" Maxxis All Tracs, or 26" Mud Lites (deeper lugs). Most of the riding I do is hard pack to loose sand trail riding, with the occasional excursion into the mud. Has anyone had the All Tracs? How do they fare in deeper mud? The mud lites obviously are a different animal, and was also wondering how they handle on hard pack. Does anyone know if the 26" mud lites will slow my machine down on the top end considerably? The reason I ask is a friend has these tires on his Grizzly, and they sucked about 10 mph on the top end. My machine will do 67 now (speedo).....
Thanks

Mudlites are a nice light mud tire, but if you ride mostly hardpack and dry you probably should get a tire like the alltracs, Holshot ATR or Badlands. I don't mention bighorns anymore because they just got so heavy. They used to have a lightweight bias ply version that mike penland uses for racing. The radial version is kinda heavy.
I chose the badlands because I mostly see rocks and hardpack. They are a little better than Holeshots in the mud. I would get them again. Mine are the narrow ones, 8" in front, 10" in rear. I would probably get the 11" wide ones in the rear if I had the chance to do it over.
I have 26" mudrunners for a muddy ride. Every bit of tire weight will slow your acceleration way down. Weight makes it harder to jump and ride fast on trails. Mudlites are a lot more like my mudrunners than a hardpack tire like the holeshot, the all trac or the badlands.

I agree with NYROCS accessment of the tires... the All Tracs run small, & will end up running about 24" O.D. this makes them a great handling tire for high speed trail riding, & they are a favorite of hare scramble racers... they are not, however, any good in the mud... IMO, the Mud Lites are a pretty good all around tire, they do not do well in extreme mud situations, & they wear really fast, if used as a "rippin" tire, on a quad as powerful as the Twin Peaks, or Prairies, or if they spend much time on hard pack, or road riding... The ATR's are supposed to be available in a 26" version this year, my expirience with the 25" tires has been good, however I'm a bigger fan of the Bad Lands right now, they perform excellently on trail, & probably go through the mud, as well as any of the current radials ( I'll admit, that I prefer to run the ATR fronts, & the 11" wide Bad Land rears as a set, & this IMO, offers a better tire combo, than either pair alone... I have also still stand by the 26" Goodyear MTR radials, although the fronts are too tall & sidewalls soft for some riders, however, I have my fronts mounted on a pair of 6" wide, double beadlocks, & in this configuration, they'll hold their own, with any good tire out there... I've also done alot of high speed trail pounding, with a set of 26" Goodyear Mudrunners, & while I used to think they were the ultimate all around tire, with heavy emphasis on mud, they are much stiffer, & heavier, than I like to have for most riding situations... I still do think they are usually under rated, as a real mud tire though... I think the radial Big Horns are nearly as heavy as the 26" Mudrunners... & while you can easily get used to the weight, IMO, it is excessive, for a tire of that type... the Big Horns, are the "coolest" looking tire, of the ones mentioned so far...
