Why EFI?
#21
Most of the hot rodders and off-roaders I know have switched over to EFI. The off-roaders I know like it for the off camber and caster rough stuff which causes problems for carbs. The hot rodders like it for the tune-ability. They say you can fine tune so much more accurately than you can with a carb and the throttle response outstanding. One guy I know has a 454 in his Chevelle and it ran like a completely different car with EFI. Throttle response and power increase was like night and day. Scary ride. With a laptop and a dyno you can do some really amazing stuff with EFI.
For power, efficiency and tune-ability EFI is where it's at.

Custom Chevy 454 EFI systems, laptop computers . . . ???
Sounds like this stuff cost almost as much as some ATVs.
I bet if you kept the carb on your ATV and put all that custom built EFI / laptop money into other preformance upgrades you'd end up with a faster machine. If money was no object and reliability / servicability in the deep backwoods was not important, then a complex laptop-tuned EFI might make sense. The problem is, money will always be an object for 99.9% of consumers and the manufacturers know this so we'll get low-end systems which will still be more complicated and expensive than carbs, but less tunable and less reliable.
My carbs simply don't have any performance problems, much less any performance problems that justfy a more complex alternative fuel system. There are plenty of ultra fast vehicles out there with carbs. It's too bad that soon, like 2-stroke motors, carbs will be regulated out of existence and we'll have no choice. Don't worry though, soon enough the industry, including the cheerleading magazines, will have succeded in convincing us that the new product (the only one that they will be able to legally sell) is better . . . . . after all, what other choice do they have?
Don't anger your local dealer, because if ATVs go the way of automobiles, you'll need their very expensive diagnostic machines to troubleshoot your new, over complicated, over priced, over weight, computer controlled ATV

Laptop? I would just take my crap PC that I paid $5 for with me to do the programming and just do the programming either near the car or in the shop on the dyno. Also, you don't need a new laptop to do this. The used $300 variety works fine.
Some people have already done all the perf mods they can, with the products that are out there.
EFI systems are often around $1000 to $1500 for cars, that is what I paid, but I suspect that there are setups out there that are going to be cheaper.
EFI is eventually going to be the "Norm" on ATVs.

I am trying to figure out if EFI will be worth it when i will be riding between 4,500 feet and 13,000 feet over mountain passes. I want the solid axle of the prairie 700 and the 8 valve v-twin but the EFI on the King Quad might be a better choice. Would the Single cylinder 4 valve EFI out perform the v twin 8 valve prairie/twin peaks if the prairie is jetted for 8,000 and i am at say 12,000 feet alot????

Here is an email I sent Saturday to DynoJet and their reply I received today.
Tim,
It is very likely we will release a unit for the King Quad 700. It will
probably cost about the same as the Polaris unit, but that has yet to be
determined. I do not know when the product will be available as development
is not yet complete.

As you probably already know, Suzuki has introduced their King Quad 700 with
EFI. I know you make the Power Commander for the Polaris 700 EFI. Will you
be making one for the King Quad? If so, how much will it be and more
importantly when will it be ready for sale?

Meyerman, EFI will will work the best when moving from elevation to elevation.
However, you can get a dial a jet system that will allow you to turn a **** to adjust your mixture for high altitude. Also, a rumor floated around that when kawi does come out with EFI, it will be adaptable to the older prairie.
If you don't like to work on stuff yourself, get the KQ for the EFI. But, you can get the P700 to run at those elevations with the twist of a ****.

Haven't been on in a while as I have been researching my new FZ1 on another forum.
I wanted to clarify an earlier reply where I quoted PGMFI instead of speed density. PGMFI is in fact a Honda term as NYROC mentioned but it is simply Honda's way of saying speed density.
My Acura CL has the identical types of sensors that my "speed density" Mustang had.
I for one do not want EFI on my quad because in the end a properly tuned card should allow for more power unless you are talking about 10's of thousands of dollars worth of EFI stuff. Why bother when jets are only 2 bucks a piece.......
