Default What does it take?

Sorry don't know much about Prairies, but we are looking into a second bike to have and a Prairie just may be it because I've always liked them. I don't think I could afford a brand new 700 right now, but I could probably pick up a used 650 for the right price and have some questions.
What would it take to make a 650 run with a stock 700? I am thinking the basic mods would be a K&N airfilter, slip-on HMF exhaust, DG3, rejet, and some clutching. How would that do against a stock P700?
I would also like to know how many miles in a full tank of gas you guys are getting out of your bone stock 650s.

Are there any problems to look out for if I were to get probably a pre-2003 650? I heard something about the belts not being tight enough or something, not sure.

Thanks for the info, I am still trying to make a final decision.

yellow650rincon; as far as the belt goes that is normal maintenance. your proposed plan should take care of a 700p

1 thing you should look out for is the frame wright below the plastic by the battery. i think KOD (i think he likes to lanch the prairie. LOL) and someone else had that problem. if you have a welder it wont be a problem and you might be able to get a discount.

i can get about 90 miles on one tank of gas with the mods i have.

hope this helps

I was racing against marylandatv's heavily modded p700 and while he did beat me it really wasnt a "blown away" situation..the 700 is def.faster but not untill he spooled it up a bit.... rolling start side by side it didnt walk away from me like i thought it would, dont get me wrong..it was faster..just not as fast as I invisioned..and I could climb those steep coal slage mountains just a bit better with my stocker springs I could keep my revs higher..but damn that full muffler system he has sounds sweet, what a throaty roar..without being too obnoxious.....try riding behind a rappy with a white bros on and youll really like the sound of stocker silence..lol

Thanks for the info guys!

I read on NYROCs website that the 2002 Prairies have a different "ignitor" that doesn't work well with the DG3. It doesn't produce as dramatic power increases as the 2003 650s do. What's this all about? Could I buy a different ignitor or what?

The P650 will already run with the P700 on trails. The 700 is faster, but if you're on real trails you can't use up the speed or power in either one of them.

I have the mods you mentioned except Twinair in place of K&N and 02 dynatek cdi instead of DG3....EPI primary pink spring going on tomorrow.....mine keeps up with the rest of them (when I got nuthin' better to do). I would forget the HMF as it is the least HP gain (if any) and it's pricey.

Belts on the P650's and 700's are a minor maintenance item and have been talked into the ground....I'm tired of reading about them, because they're really a non-issue. Just like carbs, the belt has to be adjusted right and then it's good to go for hundreds of miles, then replace or adjust if it stretches or wears and starts squealing (about an hour's work) and you're good to go again.

I get about 80 miles per tank in the mountains even when I'm hard on it, above and below timberline.

The '02 P650 is a safe, fast, reliable and good handling bike.

p.s.: The belt light issue at 100 hours a couple of posts down is not an issue on the '02; not a big deal on the '03's either if you follow nyroc's tech tip.

Thanks, kawiyowee.

Are you saying that the HMF pipe didn't give you anymore power? I know that it really improved my mid-range and top end pull on my Rincon, right where I needed it. Well they do say the pipes help some bikes, whereas they hurt others...
How big of an improvement did all of the mods give you and what is your top end like?

I don't think Im heavily modded Metallikev? Im a little heavy personally~lol But Im tryin to diet!~lol. Being a 6' 2 -250 pounder I look for a little extra power where ever I can find it. I also have my Prairie setup for woods riding, where I wanna be quicker from 0-50 and don't worry about top end or rolling speed take offs all those my quad has a bit of that also. Whats Important to me is out of the hole quickness. I don't agree with kawiyowee, Because I would not forget the HMF! It plays a big part in my quads performance. Im running the EPI Pink Spring, Dyna CDI and the HMF Penland full exhaust w/o the (TRM) torque range modifier insert. By removing the TRM it allows the quad to hit much harder on the low and mid range and I have WAY more power there then ever before! I do use and like any and all the extra power and torque I can get when Im chasing my buddys on there sport quads. Depending on conditions I just slip the TRM back in and I'm ready for the wet and the power is more spread out. The torque range modifier on the HMF pro series pipes work! See HMFs Web Site or give them a call they'll tell you all about it. If you liked the slip-on on your Rincon you'll love the HMF Penland full series! I believe its a mod to have! and it does sound sweeet~lol But more then that it delivers. You gotta remember those both the 650 and 700 Prairies in stock form are good quads and depending on the rider these quads can hang with just about anything. Setup all depends on what your wanting to get out of the quad? If your watching your dollars? I would just start with Springs! Handling is improved 100% with a set of progressive springs up front and I hear elka has some good ones as well! If I was to start over front springs would be the first things I buy! Then its only 15 to 20 bucks each and play with a few clutch springs. I like the Pink again with a focus on quickness, But I might play around with a few others myself to see whats gained and loss where? Maybe even swtiching around from time to time? If you have the money to spend? Then I would go with a full exhaust system over a slip on, Dyna CDI etc. etc. I really like the setup Im running now the only other thing I have been thinking about is a 4 degree key? ~coop

I the very first modification I would do would be the DG3. It's only $140 and I hear it makes a good amount of power over stock. I may also get the DG offset key, which is only $16, but I would have to see how hard it would be to install. After that, I would get a K&N airfilter, HMF slip-on and rejet. I wouldn't buy the full exhaust right away because it's $550, I would probably get it later on. Then, of course, I would have to get the DG snorkel. I'm not sure if I should do that tranny mods before or after all of the other modifications, because I would want the tranny to perform its best with the mods I have. So here would be the list of modifications I would hope to have.

K&N Airfilter
Rejet
DG Intake Snorkel
DG3
DG Offset Key
HMF Exhaust
and some tranny mods

How well do you think it would perfrom with all of these things? Does anyone have something similar?

I have a P650 with a dyna and black spring, in 300ft I can take a stock 700 with a smaller ridder by 4-5 lenghts....
