I think you're stuck with the stock setup. It's such a strange design, it would be difficult to put anything else in it's place. You can try installing a K&N filter, and maybe some of those little air box vents to open it up.

Anyone else have any ideas?

On my 1990 Mojave I took off the stock airbox and put a K&N pod filter on the carb. Works much better and is alot easier to take off and clean.

my 2000 lakota has the same weenie setup, and the airbox was broken when I got it from the dealer........waiting to see if they are going to pay to replace it,,,,,,,,,if not I may go K&N also & drop the airbox. Is the majave still able to forge fairly deep water with the K&N pod?

A pod filter is a filter that mounts right to the carb.

Don't go with a pod filter if you ride in alot of water because the filter is out in the open and suck water into the engine. A UNI pod filter maybe a better choice, but I still wouldn't ride in to much water. If you like riding in mud and water, stay with the stock airbox and get a K&N flat filter and drill 3, 1 inch holes in the airbox lid.
