Default Lowered my P650 seat height to 32.0"

6 weeks of intense research finally paid off today! First, I want to say THANX to Mike W (newbeetle) for his help on this mod...I also got some good insight from a few folks on these atv forums...thanx for all of the help guys!

Anyway, today I lowered my seat height to 32.0"...that is 1.7" lower than the stock P650 seat height of 33.7 (and its also 2.3" lower than the stock P700 seat height of 34.3"). More importantly, I lowered my quad's center of gravity...which I hope will help it handle better in my XC races. I used a level and tape measure in my garage to measure this seat height at two different times and I had 5lbs of air pressure in all 4 tires at the time. This mod cost me a little over $500 to do. My **HOPE** is that this mod will result in better handling/cornering on tight & twisty (dry) XC courses and perhaps a little better acceleration (but at the cost of slightly slower top-speed perhaps). I won't know for sure if these benefits exist until next week when I finally get a chance to test it out. I'll post back with my impressions.

To lower my quad, I simply installed 22" tires on the front and rear of my quad! I installed (used) rear rims and tires came from a V-force. For the fronts, I ended up buying a new set of 11x6 Douglas red label rims (which normally fit on a Kaw. Bayou 300/400) combined with a new set of Goodyear Tracker HP 22x7-11 tires (which normally fit on a Honda Recon or Suz. Ozark). To make the new front rims fit properly on my quad, I needed more inside the rim clearance for the brake caliper(it was barely rubbing when the rim was rotated). So I had to install a set of 1" Highlifter wheel spacers to push the rims away out from the brake caliper. I mounted it all up today and took a few pics (I might post them next week if any one is interested in seeing them).

My normal set of rims/tires is C-series rims and 25" bear claw tires. I believe that the C-series rims have a slightly wider stance than stock rims b/c of a different offset. Here's the measurements that I took today with the 22" wheels installed to compare it to my normal set of rims/tires:

Seat Height........32.0" (STOCK is 33.7", but I did not actually measure before 22" tires were installed)
Ground Clearance at rear diff......6.25" (BEFORE was measured at 7.6"...so I lost about 1.35" of GC)
Outside to Outside Width of Rear Tires.....3' 10" (BEFORE was measured at 3' 10")
Outside to Outside Width of Front Tires.....3' 9" (BEFORE was measured at 3' 8" so I ended up 1" wider)
How far the ft. Brake Rotor is tucked inside ft. Rims....1.25" (BEFORE was measured at 2.5" so I lost 1.25" of protection)

Like I said above, I have not tried out my quad with these wheels installed (b/c I'm taking the fam. on a road trip to New Orleans this weekend and won't have a chance to ride again until next week sometime). I'll post back after I try these wheels out. For now, I can tell you that the 11" WIDE rear V-force tires and slightly narrower front tires make my quad look lean and mean! I can't wait to try them out next week at a local MX track!

NOTE: I plan to run these 22" tires in dry XC races and switch back to my 25" wheel set-up for the muddy races.

Happy trails...

Thanx for the kind words...I took a couple of pics yesterday (using a non-digital camera) and I'll try to post the pics as soon as I get them developed/scanned into my computer sometime later next week.

As promised, I uploaded some pics of my quad on this forum (under my page) including some pics with 22" wheels installed. They are now pending approval, so check back soon to see them!

FYI: The new pics on my page (click on the little camera to the left) have been approved. Check them out and let me know what you think of the 22" wheels mounted on my P650!

I would like to know how it performs and would think speed is lost? also losing almost 2" of clearance I don't think I could do that? The smaller .190s are really going to be put to the test when you nail a rock with all that Prairie weight? I've seen them dent and bend easy when there on sport quads! I found a couple of extra ho ho's and a big old extra thick milk shake helps to lower my center of gravity!-lol But I'm working on that!~lol. It Looks very trick those! and the rear tires look like there ready to grab some serious trail! almost looks a little stretched out and Ive never seen anyone do it yet, You might be on to something? Very curious on what's lost and what's gained? ~coop

I'll report back after I have a chance to test them out on the trails. I'm hoping that I will accelerate a little faster and handle/corner better too. As for trade-offs, I suspect that I will lose some top-speed as a result. In theory, I believe I will lose about 13.6% top-speed, meaning that my normal 66mph topspeed with 25" wheels will be reduced to 57mph...if this is true, I can probably live with this provided that my quad accelerates faster and handles significantly better in the tight turns, etc.

As for the lower GC and potential damage to the red label Douglas rims, that is a real concern...however, keep in mind that I now have 6" of GC at the lowest point and this is more than many sport quads (for example, the YFZ 450 and Raptor 660 both come with only 4.5" of GC). Of course, the red label alum. rims will probably not hold up as well as C-series (billet aluminum) rims, but I will probably use my 25" wheels whenever my XC races are very rocky or muddy...and only use the 22" wheels whenever its dry and not too rocky. Where I live and race, there are lots of XC courses that are not very rocky. As a side note, I somehow managed to dent one of my front C-series rims at the GNCC that I race in last January in Gilmer, TX. I can only imagine what would have happened if I had red label rims installed at that time. That being the said, I will definite NOT be using the 22" wheels if I race at the same GNCC course next year.
