i have 2 03' chevy, luckily i was unloading my quad when both snapped on mine with 24k, the dealer replaced the tailgate and the straps but they told me they were the new ones. They told me to bring my other 03 in and they would just replace them. luckily the quad or me didnt get hurt, but the tailgate hit my hitch bar and slid down the driveway with my kfx on it.

Folks,
Thanks for all the kind words and feedback. I purchased a 2004 Silverado In January, received a notice in March sometime. It was not a recall, nor have I received a recall notice, just a "losely worded warning". The truck he was killed on was a 2000 and the person who owned it never received a notice. Evidently GM in thier infinite wisdom thought the owners of newer trucks should be 'warned' first. I would have thought logically that some bean counter at GM would have realized the people who have older trucks were more at risk. I would have also thought to minimize the risk, GM would have stated to 'take the talegate off until replacement parts are available'. GM is doing a good job of keeping these accidents and deaths quiet, which is typical of big business. It's all about profits and not about the quality of the product.

This problem sounded familiar and then I remembered.....I had this EXACT thing happen to my 86 FORD Bronco in 87. The truck was one year and 2 weeks old (back then it was a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty) and the local dealer (where I bought it) said "thats too bad". I had to set an appointment with the regional FORD rep and wait a month, but he took care of it because it was a problem affecting all the full-size Broncos at the time.
Just a personal observation but it appears that the Chevy guys spell better than the Ford guys on this board.

Brew: For an extra two bits worth of stainless steel or high carbon steel, somebody died? What a joke! We need more MBA's trying to figure out how to screw their suppliers, labor or customers. They have no idea wtf results from substandard workmanship or materials.
Sorry for your loss pal.

.. It happened to me now, too. Well fellas- one of the cables broke on me yesterday. And this is me, who never thought it would happen to him! Nothing happened- I just was looking at the cables and one looked like it wasn't falling in line like it should have so I grabbed it and pulled slightly and break. Are these things really that cheap? I'm gonna go hound the dealer today! Good luck to anyone else on this...........
