Default Hatfield/McCoy Trail restrictions

.. I wanted to ask if there are noise level restrictions in the Hatfield McCoy Trail system. My quad is like totally uncorcked- no airebox and a Supertrapp pipe- the thing is LOUD. I ride closed courses mainly, and have had the cops called on my for blasting around the neighborhood- just to test out my carb jetting. So I don't wanna go all that way and be told to go home becuase I'm too loud.

I don’t believe the H/M authority currently has a noise restriction, but riding a noisy machine anywhere but on a race track sanctioned for such (or a huge piece of private property where the owner doesn’t care) is generally not in our (the general ATV riding public) best interest because of potentially turning people against us who previously didn’t care or didn’t have an opinion one way or the other about ATVs (because of the objectionable noise). When enough people complain riding areas get closed. I’m really not coming down on you (I’m on your side) but that was just a little of my opinion tossed in with what information I’ve gained from the H/M web site. We all need to be diplomats to the non-riding public and think in the long term to preserve the sport we enjoy.

However what you do need to have is a USFS approved spark arrestor on your exhaust system (you can find a copy of their trail rules here). As long as it meets that qualification you should be OK...

I have been going there since it was open.I know they do require a spark arrestor. Now in all of those trips I have only encountered a ranger once. They are at the trailheads when open though. If you ride Rockhouse or Buff mountain you can ride into towns on the other end of either of those trails.I do know the locals do not like that at all(the noise). Not putting down the sport quad guys but they are the ones getting the heat generally. We ALL know a Raptor,400ex yada yada yada will wheelie but these guys seem to need to prove it on main street.Get an arrestor, keep all four on the road and you should be ok.Enjoy the trails

For what its worth here goes:

I have rode on all of the H/M trails except the brand new one. I would guesstimate I have been on each trail 20 times..

Each time I was on a CRF450 with a CHM full race pipe. My buddy was on a CRF450 with a ProCircuit Ti-4 and another buddy on a YZ450 with a Yosh pipe.. None of us had spark arrestors, and there is no comparison to how loud we were..

None of us have ever been checked for spark arrestors, we talk to rangers all the time, and nobody has given a rats a$$ yet.

So from a guy that lives here and rides here often.....I say go with what ya know. But there are exceptions to the rule, and you may get fined and all that.

Maybe it would be best to pop a baffle in that pipe just in case. Oh do you ride with ear protection, I SAY DO YOU WEAR EAR PLUGS???? LOL

.. LOL-- well it's maybe not quite that loud- with the helet on it's OK. But yes- it does get a bit old when riding with your buddies because you hafta turn the engine off in order to talk. Dumb question time--- what is a baffle and where dows it go? I have a supertrapp pipe, I don't know where it would go, but what I do now, albeit with minimal results is run the maximum discs I can. I think more than anything else is the open air filter-- a la no air box-- any suggestions to help quiet this thing down? Thanks
