P650 cooling problems i need help!!!!!!
#1
I recently acquired a 2002 p650. It runs great but the fan was running awful so i put a bigger aftermarket one on there from my local parts store. Even after i put the new fan on it runs hot. i can ride it for 30 to 45 min. at a slow engine speed till it gets hott?? i have no idea what to do ...I also found that the fan was straight wired to the ignition when i got it and i dont know where the fan is supposed to be wired into the thermostat. LOL i dont even know where the thermostat is..This is pitiful..please help:

i have the radiator cleaned out. i pulled the rad. cap off and i can see coolant movement. I've been told to check my thermostat....i've yet to find it. looks like imma have to pull the plastic off which is gonna be fun cuz i dont have a service manual as of yet. I cant find any breakdowns of any sort online ne where. .

The thermostat is in a housing just to the left of the cap ( under the plastic )... but if you are witnessing good coolant flow, it is likely not your water pump or thermostat... 99.9999999999999% of the time, it really is the fact that the radiator is dirty... the frame rails & cooling fan, block major parts of the radiator, causing a nearly 50% blockage... If you are positive that the radiator is cpompletely clean... & from what you have already described, then it is likely that your system is not developing pressure... are you tightening the cap to the 2nd click on the cap ??? the radiator cap housing is plastic, & has been known to warp, under extreme heat, & will not allow the cap to seal.... see if you can do / borrow the tools to do a pressure test of the coolant system...

i will check to see if i'm gettin the second click. i believe that i am though. i'll clean the rad again. i'm really having a go around with this thing it's drivin me crazy. What all holds the plastic on besides the bolts to the rack?

I have found it easiest to clean the radiator with the inner fenders removed( infact I've made custom snap in, inner fenders )... if you purchased the quad used, & it's been getting hot ( & continues to do so, after insuring that the cap is fully tight ), you may want to remove the radiator for a thourough cleaning... it may help to have someone hold a flash or trouble light inside, behind the radiator, & look through the front, shining the light through... you'll likely be amazed at how plugged it really is...

I was messing around on the Kawi parts website and notice that the radiator part numbers have changed 3 times since the 02 P650 and the last time was mid year on the 2004 P700 the last revision is the only part number showing on the 2005. I was wondering what the differences were. If the latest one has a larger cooling capacity I may want to buy one for my 800 project if they bolt in the same.

this could be bad news i have pullled the inner fenders to clean it. i left them off. for now till i get this prob. fixed. i let the engine idle for a min. or two with the rad. cap off. when i was watching the coolant i didnt really notice much flow until i gave it a lil throttle. the level dropped but abrubtly came back up. Then i saw hot water rise/bubble to the top?? what could this mean?

It is possible that your cooling system was air bound. I know that whenever you change a thermostat, water pump, heater core, etc.. on your car, you need to run the car with the heater on, for a good while and leave the radiator cap off. This lets any air bubbles caught in the system purge themselves as the coolant circulates. I know that the burp bottle is supposed to take care of this, but it has been my experience that running the car w/ the cap off does a better job of getting rid of trapped air. Maybe being air bound is causing your problem?

On this topic, is it better to run the 700 without the inner side covers or with them? I can see that with them, it would force more air through the rad, but do they help that much?
