I apparently wore a spot in my belt trying to pull someone out of mud,(need new belt & shims) the dealer says to drive in 4 low up to 40 mph ,to make belt last longer ... shouldnt the brute be able to pull?

It seams a little fishy to me. Did you smell your belt? See smoke from your belt? I would think the tires if you have stock would kick loose before you would burn the belt like the way you discribed. Yes when I pull I'm in low range. No I travel a heck of a lot under 40 in high. You get a feel of your clutch after a while and if you feel it's hard on the bike you pop it in low. I'm thinking if you were giving it just enough gas to move slowly in High and you were towing a lot of weight and your belt was too loose etc... then maybe. When pulling someone out of the mud I use my winch and brakes. That brute will pull if the belt is adjusted right and you use the appropirate gears. The shims are adjustment peices that are needed because a new belt is tighter than the one you had replaced. A small little spot on your belt is no biggie to me either. Welcome to the fourms.

When you see the smoke it's too late. My 650 made it to the next day when I was trying to pull\winch someone out. My buddy did the same thing pulling me with his new Brute. I seen the smoke but it was too late. His belt tripped the light when we got back on the rode. If you flat spot the belt it will not make it.

Its not hard to prevent the smoke show from your belt. Know how the motor should sound at certain speeds, just pay attention. If your pulling at a constant speed and all of a sudden your motor revs but you didn't press the throttle then your belt is slipping. Don't keep on the throttle.

Also, a black spring should be installed in the secondary to prevent belt splipage. Also make sure the belt is on the tight side of the spec. I know my new Brute will have a loose belt in the comming days so I will have to tighten my belt.

Also, a belt is easy to change. Takes about 15 minutes or so.

with any belt driven quad, you should use low for low speeds and pulling cause it's easier on the machine. sounds like in this case there was a defective belt though, assuming you don't have too many hours already piled up on the machine. i know when i get in the woods on the trails i put it in low, easier on the machine.

I burned up my belt pulling a polaris 700 out of the mud, but it was my fault cause I used HI range. My thinking was, since the machine has so much torque and HP that I really didn't need LO range for that. Well....I found out that I was wrong. Yes the motor has plenty of torque and HP to do that, but the belt is the weakest link and good thing. If it wasn't, the torque and HP of the motor would probably break something else. The dealer said that I could run in HI all day long, but when I pull something, no matter the size, that I should use LO range always. That way, the belt doesn't have a strain on it and will not burn up. Since then, I have pulled up to about 1200 lbs on a 1600lb trailer (total of about 2800lbs) many times at my farm and deer lease and it has done great.
