servicing brute force
#1
What type of oil is best to use in the engine and front differential. I have been told by dealers use only motorcycle oil and not to use synthetic oil in the front differential. Also there are Tech filters at Wal-Mart which are cross referenced to the Brute Force, should I risk using this oil filter?
Confused!
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

New... this has been beaten to death regarding what's the best oil. Personally, I used the Kawachem oil in the motor and the front diff. You can use syn oil, just choose one that doesn't have friction modifiers such as Mobil 1 MXT for the front diff. I always stick use the Kawa filters in my bikes.

The reason dealers are telling you not to use synthetic oil in your diff is because most dealers HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT! Yes you can use synthetic gear oil in your differentials. In fact it is better to. Plus, you may not feel this physically when you are riding, but they will work better and smoother and may even help reduce fuel consumption. The latter would be very very minimal. Check out Amsoil.com. Their line of lubricants are the BEST!

you can run synthetic oil in your front diff, as long as it doesnt have any friction modifiers in it. which would result in your clutch pack to slip when you pull on the diff lock.
i use mobil 1 mx4t, 10w-40 in the motor only.
a purolator 1 pn#pl14610 filter.
kawachem gear &wet brake oil, for the rear axl.
i use standard motor oil for the front diff.

I think one thing you need to watch is what goes in the rear end. I went to the dealer the other day to get the fluids to change the front and rear, front no problem uses 10W-40 but the rear is very different. If you notice in the book it uses Mobil fluid 24 or Exxon Hydraul 560 or Kawa Chem Gear and Wet Brake oil. When I first asked the kid at the parts counter for the rear end gear oil he proceeded to give me regular gear oil it was difficult to get it accross to him it used a different fluid. Finally talked to a guy and he told the kid they kept it out back in bulk and I got the right stuff. Point is know what you need when you go into a dealer or you may be pouring the wrong stuff in you don't put the usual hypoid gear oil in the rear end according to the owners manuel. I personally don't know the exact difference between actual gear oil and the hydraulic fluid but would like to know. and what would happen if you put in the wrong stuff. Bottom line if I had not read that owners manuel I would have regular gear oil in my rear end right now just because I would presume the dealer parts people know what goes in there. When it comes to the oil filter I saved 5.00 at Suzuki for the same filter. Kawasaki filters must be related to gas prices or something.

I am currently using a Carquest oil filter on my Brute Force, I was playing around on the net and found a cross reference to the Tech filter #ST-7317 at Wally-World.
