Installing PE carb on Mojave
#2
I have the 38 on one of my two Mojaves. The best way to do it is to use a honda 250x/300ex thumb throttle and buy the carb for a honda so the cable will fit. You still have to grind the stop away in the honda throttle but its much easier than the mods needed on the Mojave throttle. The choke is not hard to get to. I run a clamp on K&N with outerwear directly on the carb and have canned the stock air system.
Power is improved but mostly on the top end. The motor has a wiesco 20 over, ported head, large cam with hi rev spring kit, supertrapp exhaust, and the rev limiter removed. For a less modded motor the 36 would probably run better. I wanted the 36 for this motor but could not find one.
They come with WAY to rich jetting. Mine was way rich even with the mods and they claim they are jetted for a stock motor- HA. The 38 came with a 160 main, i changed to a 150. It had a 50 pilot, I changed it to a 38. Running needle in the middle groove. It will now run like a raped ape. When running through the gears hard it will pull the front wheels up high in 2nd and 3rd gears easily.

Does the carb fit ok into the stock intake boot? Good idea about the 250x carb but I found a Mojave 36PE for about $140 I was thinking about buying. Wonder if it is worth the trouble to save $35 off the 250x carb price? I have no engine mods so a 38 may be overkill. Do you know if a PE for the Mojave is meant to be used with a Mojave throttle cable? It does not look like there is enough room to move the cable to the top of the carb, especially with the hard elbow on the end of the cable.

The carb will fit into the stock intake boot. A PE for a mojave comes with a cable that will fit the mojave thumb throttle. Stock cable will not work. The problem is that the new carb and cable set up will not fully open with the thumb throttle. It is much more difficult to get the mojave throttle modified for full throttle than the honda throttle. You could buy a honda cable for the PE you found but you may end up spending the savings of buying that carb. You also have to modify the top rear engine mount by cutting off a section and grinding a notch in it to clear the cable that now comes straight out the top. This is easy to do. I think a 38 is a little to much for a stock mojave and may only hurt performance. A 36 might be the better choice.
Good luck with whatever you decide. If I can help any more just ask.

The carb I am looking at does not come with a cable. Talked to the salesman on the phone and he said it was just the carb and was labeled for a Mojave. He did not know what type of cable was needed. I use a twist throttle now so I don't think I would have a problem with the amount of travel, just the mating of the cable to the carb. I assume I would have to have one made if mine did not mate. Even if I went with a 250x carb, I would still need a new cable. I checked prices on a 250x carb and was told cable not included.

When I bought my carb, both the mojave and 250x came with cables and I believe you could choose between thumb and twist throttle. this was only about three or four months ago when I buoght it.
I bought it local but had priced it and asked questions about it at both Golden West and DG before deciding to buy local. Each place told me it came with a cable. I bought the 250x and it came in a box with a cable and an adapter to adapt the carb to the air box tube. The carb is the same except for one size pilot jet difference which you probably have to change anyway. Mine cost $165. The cables are available for twist throttles if that is what you have. about a year ago I bought a kehien 39 pwk for a quadzilla I had. I bought it from Golden West and it was supposed to come with a cable and a twist throttle as a kit. But all I got was a carb. I called and they sent me the cable and twist throttle. I ask them about various carb and throttle combinations and they had cables for any
kehien carb for any throttle type. The carb end of the PWK looked just like the PE cable. I think the cables are pretty standardized.
Try calling DG at 1-800-854-9134. I think they are the distributors of the carbs and ask for part numbers and what comes with the carb. Then check the part number against the carb you are looking at. It may come with a cable and your salesperson just doesn't realize it.
