Default Help with air screw on V

I have a v with muzzy, stock snorkel removed, and a K@N filter. I am running 148F and 150R jets. Runs fine at mid and high, but on cold idle as you start to give it throttle it will miss. It makes a sound like a metalic pop and stumbles. This will clear up as you ride and the engine heats up.

So I pulled the plugs and they had a lot of black soot. I thought maybe too rich at idle. I had the air screw at 2 3/4 turns out. Anyway it runs well now at 4.5 turns out with no soot on plug. I am not sure how I can be twice as many turns as anyone on this forum and am looking for help. (I made sure to count a full revolution of the screwdriver)

Thanks in advance for the help.

Buy the way the pipe must have made a difference b/c i raced my friends (450 honda with cam, pipe, airbox mod, and jet kit, and a raptor with Pipe, air box, and jet kit.) on a slight Down hill I beat the raptor and am even with the 450 through a 150 yard race. Uphill they still beat me but only by a few bike lengths. I need a better spring for the dunes.

mj, opening the fuel screw will make you richer. If it's running right with the fuel screw open 4.5 turns, you were/are lean on the pilot jets. Try a size larger pilot jet in the carbs, bet you will be back in the 2-3 turns out on the fuel screw range.

Oh I thought that screw let more air into the mix. It just seemed weird that no one else on this list mentioned changing pilot jets. And some of them have more air box mods that should lean it out even more.
