Battery relocation...?
#1
HI Guys
In the past I remeber reading about someone adding an extra battery for extended winch use . I was thinking for fabracating a new battery box and remove the little storage box under seat .
Looks like plenty of room for one large battery or two of the original type of batteries, my only concern about that location is that it it is a little close to the muffler ....I think a heat shield will take care of that .
I feel one large sealed battery will do the job ...has any one done this of have any advice on what type of sealed battery I should go with ...I see a lot of the large off road trucks sealed batterys but I forget the company name .
Thanks guys

I used a Magnacharge gel-pack battery for mine, about twice the size physically and over twice the amp/hour (i think thats the rating that matters for atv batteries, not cca) rating of the original.
For now I've just got it in whats left of the original storage box, I cut it out so the battery would fit, needs a bit of finishing work yet, but seems to sit there quite nicely.

Hi Guys
I was doing some checking on batteries , the biggest battery my friend had at the kawi dealer was a ytx20 , it was not much bigger than what I all ready have basiclly 6 more amp hours .
I did stop at a boat supply store and they had a gel battery with 30 amp hours ... I don't know to much about gel batteries ... How will a gel battery work in our machine's...?
Thanks

Guy at the local Polaris dealer told me he used gel batteries, said you can winch forever with one, I had actually gone in to check the price on a Pol 700 batt, and the gel was what he recommended. I never got much of a chance to ride it after putting in the battery, but wow, did it ever start nice, did a little light winching that also went well.

I believe there is a pic, showing my stainless battery tray, from the rear, if you click the camera on the left, showing my pics... there are guys that winch alot, that even add small automotive, or deep cycle boat battery's in this location... mine currently has a 700 Sportsman battery, but there is room in my tray for 2 of them...
there is an added benifit to relocating the battery here... the Prairies are nose heavy... adding a larger battery, this far back, & lower in the frame, can actually improve traction & handling of the quad...

Looked at your battery tray and other photos. Lots of great shots and good ideas. The workmanship on your quad appears to be outstanding and well executed.
A question about the shocks, where did you get them and what are they off of? The way you have this set up should reduce the strain on the swing arm when towing trailers or our mower.

10... you can see some of the big trail rack & spare tire carrier, in some of the pics... they really help with additional weight of a passenger, or big load on the rear rack... I actually raced a few hare scrambles with it ( & had dreams of doing a baja race )... The shocks are off a polaris indy snowmobile, & were revalved for me by a local sled shop... they are Fox shocks, & are tunable, & rebuildable... they work particularly well with my wheelie bar... they were bought used, & rebuilt for me, & I paid about $100.00 for the pair, set up...
