When tuning mixture why do you stop at highest idle?

Doesnt stopping at highest idle mean you are leaning the engine? Wouldnt you find highest then turn rich a bit? Farily limited carb expreience here.
Thanks

Im familiar with the phrase, "it ran the strongest right before it blew up".
Just wanted to validate that I didnt want to stop at highest idle. So like 1/4 turn back to the rich side?

Different engines take different amounts. Usually around 1/8 of a turn will do. Two strokes are touchy; with a four stroke you can get them in the ball park and call it good.
You have the big picture of just a touch over higest speed so you will be fine.

You can also go by drivibility symptoms. If its hard to start cold, takes along time to come off choke, hesitates off idle, pops thru the air filter going on throttle ,or back fires on throttle let off.....the mixture screw is too lean. If it idles good, and doesnt have symptoms, its set good. And I agree, with giving it a bit more rich, after finding highest idle speed.

Im about 3.50 3.75 on the screws and it starts well but burbles a bit in the box if you drive like 5mph steady. I was 2.5 2.75 and it was a monster to start.

At 4 turns out, from seated, is about the limit for that pilot jet. If it needs to be richer, then go one up on the pilot jets.

I find it hard to believe that the Keihen cv carb , doesnt have bigger pilot jets. Ill check into that. I believe #40 is stock.
No, shimming the needle wont make up for a weak idle circuit.
If its true, that there isnt bigger pilot jets, then a reamer, which is .002 bigger, than the #40 pilot jet, should fix things up.
Have you looked at nyrocs site?
nyroc
This site shows pilot jets, from 35 to 80, probably in increments of 2, for about 6 bucks each
