Plainsman,
I dought your quad will need larger jets untill you are in the 800cc catagory, the stock system will work just fine. If you need to go higher Sudco has larger jet sizes here is the stock number 40 is stock.

N424-74-XXX series and come in 40's, 42's or 45's

I believe $15 plus shipping.

So since I dont need bigger pilots, what could be clogged or gummed up in the carbs? Thinking about removing them for inspection.

Appreciate any guidance.

Thanks

The air screws are for the idle circuit and off idle circuit only. Turning them out too far will not blow up your engine. They regulate the air/fuel transition from idle to off idle. You would adjust them until the idle is at it's highest. If adjusted properly, your engine will not bog or flutter to the mid-range which isn't too far away. Keep in mind that pilot jets and air screws go hand in hand. Then the needles and shims take over via the midrange into a smooth transition up to WOT where the jets take over. All these circuits overlap each other and cause a smooth accelerating rocket V-twin. All this is different from one quad to another depending on temp, elevation and mods. I have had a quad on a four gas analizer while tuning the air screw and at highest idle....fuel mixtures were good, but in real time driving it, they needed to be tweaked a little. Play with it...don't be scared and check your plugs.

Ensure your carb slide springs are properly installed & not binding.

I've tried the 42 Pilots and my bike puffed black smoke at idle with the air screw full in to backed out less than 1/4 turn.

Is your Idle set within parameters? Try advancing your idle setting till yor bike shifts good. Then you might check your carb Sync/screw setting.

How are you guys setting your idle to 1100+ -? I figured this thing would have a tach.

Thanks

Without a tach its hard to be exact. I use the shifter to decide for me. If it grinds into gear its to high, if you have to give it gas or rock the quad to go in gear its to low. It should just have a slight clunk going in gear.
