I need help deciding on which tires to put on my Prairie 650. I've read ALL the forums and reviews on the ATR's and Bighorns. I have also considered the Mudlite XL's too. I ride mostly rocks dirt sand. My concerns on the ATR's are, it looks like the 1/2 lugs will wear down fast, and I've hear of soft sidewalls.Bighorn concern is the WEIGHT. Is the strength of the tire worth the stress on the drivetrain and noticeble power loss if there is any?

If you ride alot of rocks, the Big Horns are going to be tough to beat as far as durability... the ATR's I've had for over 2 years are wearing very well, but you are right, that the sidewalls are their weakness ( as with any radial, the sidewalls are soft )... tires like trhe Big Horns that have lots of sidewall protection, will help ( BTW... most ATV tires are only 2 ply on the sidewalls, even if listed as 6 ply tires... most will only have 6 plys on the tread area )... also there is a big lack of standardization of the "plys"... the Maxxis All Traks are listed as only a 2 ply tire, but are heavily proven in GNCC / hare scramble type racing, & are extremely durable, even weighing more than comperable sized "6 ply" ATR's...
just so you know that you can't always just go by the amount of plys to determine the toughness of a tire... BTW... if you are considering the Big Horn... have you looked at the GBC Big Horn clone, the Dirt Tamer... same basic tread, but with more siping of the tread, which should offer improved traction in the rocks...
