Default H.D. non-electric front 4 X 4 unit ???

when I was installing my spring spacers, in my full time 4 X 4 300 Prairie... I looked at the front diffy... if I remember right, it's much larger than the part time unit, & electric engagement unit, on the big Prairies...

has anyone ever looked at installing one of these 300 - 400 Prairie full time 4 X 4 units, then adding the Warn 4-2-4 drive shaft... this looks like it will offer a heavier duty front end, with the positive locking & unlocking of the Warn 4-2-4... the only negitive, would be the diff lock... but a Detroit Gearless locker can be added to the little "P's" front diffy...

IMO, this could offer a much improved real 4 X 4 unit, for the serious mudder, or for someone who owns an earlier 650 that may find repairing the stock broken diffy, to not be cost effective...

anyone got any expirience here ???

( sorry... I went through my pics, & don't have any good ones of the front diffys of either quad )... it is common on full time 4 X 4 trucks, that they have heavier front ends than trucks with lock outs... the front end of the full time 4 X 4 on my 300 Prairie appears to be heavier duty than the one that came in my selectable 650

It sounds possible without too much modification for the serious mudder but there are ratio's to consider as well. I also wonder if looks can be deceiving even though the 650 diff is smaller in size it is still required to handle more torque than the 300's. Not only from the engine but locking it also puts a larger load on the gears, now I suppose the locker slips before it over loads the diff and that may not be a valid point also a Detroit locker is available so I don't know.

Just some other things to consider is all

the gear ratio thing has come up on my post on other forums as well... however, they are likely close or the same, as the same sized tires & roughly the same sized clutches are used...

as far as the 300 unit being heavier duty...I'm guessing at this point, but like I said, it is not uncommon for a full time 4 X 4 to have heavier duty components than a part time 4 X 4...

before I got my big "P"... the 300 was my ride... we were ripping along on an unfamiliar trail ( bad news )... & I hit an end drive at WOT on the 300 ( going like 40 - 45 mph )... I jumped it, I was in the lead, & my buds behind me were able to stop, but I had that 300 like 6-8 ft in the air... as the "jump" was unexpected, my 1st reaction was to let off the gas, which caused the nose to drop... when I landed, ( heavy on the nose, & still going well over 30 mph ), I bottomed out the front suspension to the point that I shucked gravel clear over the top of me... the 300 just kept going... & never has shown a problem from that incident, well over 3 year of abuse later, it still works fine... I have no doubt in my mind, that if I did that with my big "P" locked into 4 x 4, that parts would have been flying as high as the gravel did...
