I decided to ride my 1994 Mojave 250 to work this morning and it stalled out on me. I looked behind me to see a trail of smoke (uh - oh). After 5-10 min of tryin to start it it cranked over. Ran good at high rpm's but doggish in lower rpm's.

Any ideas??? It was fully rebuilt a couple of years ago, and has relatively low hours on it since.

My Uncle had a problem that sounds like that and he just needed to adjust the valves. You might try that for a start.

 

try cleaning out the carb...see if that helps

 

Rode the **** out of it after work today and it was fine....I'll try cleaning the carb to see if it helps. Also, I think I'll pull the plug and clean/replace it and do a compression test.

Anyone know normal compression readings for this machine??

Service manual says it should be 70-114 psi.

We had a simililar problem recently with our Mojave[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif[/img] It always had been a little hard to cold start[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif[/img] But, after an hour of trying on a recent outing, I decided it was time to do some work on it. The valves were off, they should be 0.2-0.024 mm on both inlet and exhaust. Then, we cleaned the carb, had some garbage in it. Also put on a new plug wire and spark plug. Even though the one in it looked good[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] After all this, it starts on first or second kick routinely now[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] Only need to get the carb right, idles high after putting a k&n clamp on filter[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] Anyways, Good Luck.

 

Thanks for the info guys [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] I'll play with it this week. Mine also is very hard to start (and ride sometimes) in the cold. It was about 9 degrees out when I had the "smoke screen".

 

If we see 9 degrees around here in the Central Valley of California[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] I'll have bigger problems[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif[/img] then, my quad not starting[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img] I remember cold days like that, growing up in Chicago.

 

If this is a cold weather only problem, particularly if the air is kind of wet, you may be having an ice buildup problem in the carb throat. If you shut it off after it is warmed up and let it set for about 15 min does the problem go away? When the ice melts out from engine heat the problem goes away till more ice forms. Sometimes this problem can be prevented by adding water absorber to the fuel.

 

Figured it out......(sorta)

I noticed that it only started burning oil/smoking when I was jumping or going up and down hills. I pulled the drain on the air box and about 1/4 - 1/3 of a quart of oil came out.

I got the quad from my Inlaws last year with all maintenance records and am trying to figure out why so much oil would be in there. I was thinking PCV or something like that.

The quad runs great now though!!!! About 5 hours of riding yesterday in lots of slush and mud!
