smoking quad
#1
My nephew bought a 2001 Kawasaki 250 mojave. It smokes alot even after it's been running for an extended period and seems to use quite a lot of oil. It runs really good and starts right up on the first kick. Does it need new rings put in & is it something a relatively mechanical person can fix on their own? Any help or instructions on this problem will be much appreciated.

thats not good at all. this happened to my lakota and it started smoking bad and finnally it got so bad that it used 1.5 quarts of oil in about 8 hours. To fix it it would probally cost between 500 and 1000 dollars depending on the extent of the damage but it dosnt sound too good in your case. You probally need a new piston kit, valves, all new top end gaskets, maby get the cams rebuilt and it might be really bad where you need to replace your connecting rod too. If you get lucky it could just be new wrings and valve seales but it sounds like the engine is pritty shot. I would have it redone by cycle works racing, a company out of pensylvania. they specilize in mojave work and he makes a bunch of performance parts for them. plus he does great work and his prices are really, really cheap. He rebuilt my whole top and bottom end for $950 shipped. this might sound expensive but if you bring it to a dealer it will cost close to 2000 to have the same stuff done
