Im looking for a job this summer but I have to start after June 20th becuase of drivers ed. My dad said If I re-shingle our front porch, re wire our fuse box and put it out in the garage with a high voltage line running out to the garage and to rewire the whole actic(SP) And he said he would pay me about 700 to do all those jobs. So i figured out 5 hours a day, 5 days a week for 8 weeks gets me to 200hours so i divide that by 700 and get $3.50 an hour which isnt very much. These jobs need to be done around the house and i want a job that i can be at most of the day like a farmers job. Or am i getting to greedy thinkin 700 bucks is not enough to work that much? Would you guys do the house work or go get another job?

 

show your dad what you showed us and ask him this same question.
and then ask if he thinks its fare.
and let him know that if he was to hire anyone else to do this same job it would cost him 700 just to do the porch.
or if he was to hire a student he would be paying at least $5.00 an hour.
and ask him if he would work for that much ($3.50 an hour)or try and find somthing else.
or have you tryed this already.
i know i pay my kids $8.00 an hour for work around my place.
but that is in canadian dollers but thats about $6 US dollers an hour.
try asking him for more all he can say is no.
also i know around here we have a program that you can hire a student to do work through the ui center.
check around a see if there is a program around your area and see what the going wage is and then show it to your dad and see if it compares to what he wants to give you.
another thing to look at is is he going to be helping you to do the work or will you be doing this by your self.
if hes helping then i would take the money and when its done try and fine somthing else.

Well for one thing, there is no way I'd get anyone to do any wiring if they weren't an electrician. If you don't know how to do electrical, stay away from it or you could cause a lot of problems. Now about the other things he asked you to do, he's your dad and he houses you, clothes you, and feeds you. Show some respect and do the jobs he asked you to do (besides the electrical). Did you buy all the toys in your sig or did your dad buy them for you? If your dad bought them for you, you should do those chores for free. Once you get out on your own, you'll realize that nothing is free in this world and I mean absolutely nothing. Your dad is doing you a huge favor by paying you to do those jobs. Do the jobs he asked you to do and then ask him if there's anything else you can do for him. His respect for you will increase immensely.

 

Just to add to what masterblaster said,giving you 700 is better than you think,it should not take 8 weeks to shingle and rewire a attic.your thinking is flawed if you figure out your wage that way.you should nbe able to shingle a house in a few days even by yourself,i would think that would make your pay about 100 a day.as for doing electrical work , if you feel confident in doing it yourself,go ahead and do it,it is not that hard to do with a bit of basic knowledge you can find in self help books.

yeah man your lucky your dad pays you i worked everyweekend of my life and after school for him and i don't get payed and i don't expect too damn man 700 bucks is alot of money and for summer jobs just ask like yyour nabors or people that live around you if they need any help around the house or sumthing thats how i payed for my fourwheeler

 

loook around, i work at a grocery stroe, and get payed 6.50 an hour

 

Mastrblaster I already help my dad with every thing he does(even his day job) so really i already have his respect.
Bushpusher. I told him that i wanted a job that would keep me busy the whole summer and he thinks these jobs will but im not sure
I already have a 2hour job moving lawns and only getting paid 6 bucks so i dont need anymore.
Also i cant get to many jobs becuase of child labor laws so i dont think i could get one at a grocery store.
And with re-shinling the roof i also have to put down more plywood.

 

i stripped and reshingled my dads roof for free because he provided the roof over my head,you should do the same..if i was doing the roof job for someone else then id probably charge over $700 to just shingle it and then maybe another $700 to strip and replywood it..when i was 13 i was working for a guy picking up shingles that was stripped from the roof,he paid me $100 a day..

 

I'm 15 and work all week in a video warehouse processing and boxing DVD's and VHS to ship to shops where we do rentals. My neighbor works there and he got me the job. I make $6 an hour. I basically help my dad for free. Although he did just buy me $200 worth of front tires and rims for helping him all winter insulating and putting plywood up in the shop and I have helped him EVERY night and EVERY weekend for the past 3 weeks building a corral for our cows. Try your neighbors and family for work, I was off today so I clipped fence for my neighbor for a few hours, I made about $20.
