Default Prairie 650 malfunction and belt problems?

I was riding my Kawasaki prairie 650 (2001 or 2002) whatever year they came out and when i was going down a dune it started to sputter like it was hitting the rev limiter and looked down to see the display flashing and the reverse light flashing. I checked the manual and it said that this was caused because the belt failure detection system was triggered. Now it will get to about 7mph then its like it hits the rev limiter and wont accelerate at all. and the display still flashes. so is it a electrical short or was the belt failure thing triggered? thanks for any help

It tripped the belt safety switch , no biggie . Just remove the black plastic cover that houses the belt and you will see a toggle type switch . Flip the switch the other way , re-install the cover and you are good to go . On the 2002 model you don't have to worry about the re-set procedure of crossing wires . One more thing , there is a reason the safety switch tripped so have a good look at your belt while the cover is off . More than likely your belt is wearing and a piece of cord came from the side of the belt catching the roll pin on the safety switch . That's what it is designed to do , so you know your belt is starting to wear . That does not mean your belt is pooched , you can more than likely just re-set the switch , clean out any debris inside the cover and re-install . Any more questions , feel free to ask , and i can walk you through it .

Its Your cash, unless your belt is trashed, secondary clutch shims are alot cheaper ($5) than belt.

when you take your belt cover off TAKE THE KEY OUT OF THE QUAD.
and put it in your pocket because if someone turns the key with the cover off you will be cursing them for a long time.
its very easy to check just undo all the bolts and pull it off there is no suprizes but take the key out first.
like hellyeh said take a good look at it befor you reset it.
good luck.

I've read a couple of posts that say to take the key out. What happens if the key gets turned on while the cover is off?

I meant to say, "I've read a couple posts that say not to take the key out."

It's to keep someone from starting the bike, and you having to clean blood and finger meat out of the belt.
